Twins measuring different sizes

I went for my 12 week scan and seen my baby measuring 11.5 weeks all healthy and well, the the sonographer found a second sac but was unsure of why it was there or what it was she took some measurements and told me it looked like a bleed. I waited for her to bring my notes back out only to be called back into a room. She then told us we were pregnant with twins but the other only measured 7 weeks and to call my midwife for some advise. At the time I was shocked and didn't really take it in until I thought about it. Why didn't she get a second oppionion in the scan room and why didn't she look into the sac to see what was inside it. In my maternity notes she has put 2nd feat us has no hart beat ! She didn't even look. I have been told by my midwife that unless anything happens, bleeding etc, then I will have to wait until my 20 week scan to find out what has happened to twin no 2. They seem to think it will reabsorbe back into my body. Has this happened to anyone else and has the second twin grown ? I can't believe the will leave me 2 months wondering if I'm going to have twins or 1 baby, and it's strange knowing there is still a baby inside me possibly not alive. I already have 3 children but really need so advise.

I don't know how to say this gently but you had twins, then sadly one died at 7 weeks. The other one looks fine and is growing normally. It is unusual but not at all unheard of. The one that has not survived will be most likely absorbed back into your body.

I'm really sorry. It's called Vanishing Twin Syndrome. A surprisingly large number of pregnancies begin as twins, but for chromosomal reasons (usually), one doesn't develop. As Roshbegosh says, usually it is reabsorbed back into the body. I'm sorry :-( It's not a nice thing to think about.

so sorry to hear this its just happened to me I had a scan at 6 weeks because of a previous miscarriage and got told I had twins. then waited for my 12 week scan which I got told that one twin had died at about 10 weeks but the other was alive n healthy.i asked what I would have to do n they said it would absorb back into yr boood stream n not affect the other baby at all.its called the vanishing twin. I havnt had any bleeding n the baby has completely gone now at my 20 week scan the sac was still there so they wanted to scan me again at 28 weeks n this scan showed that it had completely gone now and I'm now almost 31 weeks n all ok. xx
