Milk?

Just wondering if anybody is drinking normal fresh milk whilst pregnant? Rather than the uht milk?
My mum drank lots of tea with fresh milk throughout her pregnancies (so caffeine overload too) and me and my brother were okay.
Just wondered what you ladies are doing. I'm 6w+3d . Thanks :)

I don't know anyone who didn't drink normal, fresh milk during pregnancy. If you are in the UK all milk is pasteurised, so fine to drink.

mrsmugoo · 05/12/2013 15:28

I drink regular milk and I drink about 3 or 4 cups of ordinary tea a day too. I'm sure decaf is much worse for me!

PuppyMummy · 05/12/2013 16:30

I hav cereal and a big glass of semi-skimmed milk everyday. nothing on nhs saying not to and not mentioned by my midwife as one to avoid?

what's the reasoning behind avoiding shop bought pasteurised milk?

LastOneDancing · 05/12/2013 16:33

I'm having milk.

It's on the NHS 'good stuff to have' list isn't it?

DaleyBump · 05/12/2013 16:35

I had two litres of milk a day when I was pregnant. As a pp said, it's perfectly safe if you're in the UK.

ilovepowerhoop · 05/12/2013 16:36

fresh milk from the supermarket is pasteurised so perfectly safe. Are you thinking of raw, non-pasteurised milk instead? (that you wont get from the supermarket)

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 05/12/2013 16:37

Why wouldn't you drink milk Confused?

You aren't mixing up pasteurised and UHT are you? It is true that you shouldn't eat un-pasteurised/raw milk during pregnancy but 'normal' UK milk is fine.

HavantGuard · 05/12/2013 16:39

All the milk in the chilled section of UK supermarkets is pasteurised. That's fine to drink in pregnancy. Though you don't need to drink milk at all if you don't want to (I hate the stuff.)

KatieBurningham · 05/12/2013 16:43

Yes I'm going mad. Grin
I'm thinking that what you buy in the shop is non pasteurised and uht is pasteurised. Clearly I'm a tit lol
Back to drinking milk it is lol x

Why wouldn't you drink milk? Like pps have said, I assume you're buying it and not squeezing it directly from the cow Grin so it's pasteurised!

I am drinking huge amounts of milk to try and stop the dreaded heartburn and acid indigestion, works for a bit!

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 05/12/2013 16:55

Ha ha Katie Grin

Milk in the shops is pasteurised. It's the 'straight from the cow' stuff you shouldn't drink.

HavantGuard · 05/12/2013 17:20
Grin

Raw milk is bad. That's milk that, as it sounds, is 'uncooked', fresh from the cow.

Pasteurised milk is fine. That's what's sold chilled in the shops. It's been heated to a high temperature for a short time. It is safe and when refridgerated keeps for several days.

UHT stands for Ultra High Temperature and has been 'ultra pasteurised.' It gets heated to a higher temperature and as such can be left unrefridgerated until opened. It is safe.

HavantGuard · 05/12/2013 17:22

Basically if this woman offers you milk, just say no.

KatieBurningham · 05/12/2013 17:25

Haha havantguard !!
I think I've got my little brain around it now.
Don't buy a cow, don't milk a cow, sorted!

That's about the size of it Katie. You're set Smile

I'm drinking milk like it's going out of fashion. It's the best thing ever at the moment
