Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

god my arm agony after WC and the other sore from the bloods - not fun to sleep on. Only now, 3 days after the wc can I sleep on that arm.

had some days off work and forgot to take my ondanse in the evening yesterday, was OK, and no morning vom, so have tried again today.

My most nauseous time is straight after breakfast, between 9-11, yeurch. Im generally OK now in the evenings.
have been drinking the odd bit of tonic water but dh suddenly asked if quinine was safe during pg Confused bit of googling suggests ok not in massive amounts

ChaffinchOfDoom · 09/01/2014 20:28

hey exquisitechristmascakes

planning and prep...read Loopy Lou's links, stock up on ice lollies and boiled sweets Grin
roll with it, don't worry about housework...and have several months just doing the bear minimum and grabbing every damned nap you can.
And don't feel guilty - you're building a whole 'nother human in there! you are awesome!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 09/01/2014 20:29

bum. 'bare' would've been better

Meerka · 09/01/2014 20:33

Hiya exquisite

welcome to the Sisterhood of the Sickbucket.

Biggest single bit of prep you can do is to get meds early .... is your doctor supportive?

oh bugger, doomfinch, I've been drinking tonic water cause it helps with the f-awful taste, suppose I'll have to cut down now. Decided it's a cross between a metal coin in your mouth, tonic water that's actually gone off and old roadkill. 15 weeks and 5 days to go ...

MurderOfGoths · 09/01/2014 20:43

Evenings are still bad for me, especially as the indigestion gets bad then too. Am taking Ranitidine daily now.

Oh wow Exquisite HG with two pregnancies and you are doing a third time?! You are brave!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 09/01/2014 21:06

Meerka-t
tonic water seems ok thread

Sally8655 · 09/01/2014 21:48

Evening ladies

I'm still waiting. Due date 23rd and being induced 27th if he has not arrived before. I've got everything ready its just a waiting game. I really do feel like its going to happen any day as things down below feel very strange and Braxton hicks are really strong and painful.
House is nearly done, just a few things to sort out now but these don't matter too much.

Nausea is back in full force and feeling incredibly tired. I thought that the breathlessness would get better after baby dropped but actually it's still really bad. It's hard to breath just sitting on the sofa or lying in bed.

Hoping to have a lazy day tomorrow with no visitors so I can get my last few jobs done then rest all afternoon in pjs.

I can not stress how much I'm ready for this to be over! At least I can say it'll be this month :-) its been the longest wait of my life!!

Hope time passes a bit quicker for you all xxx

Meerka · 09/01/2014 22:05

thanks doomfinch!

sally fingers crossed for you every day now.

LucindaE · 09/01/2014 22:37

Exquisite Welcome, can't better Chaffinch's advice, you are the veteran - I join MurderofGoths in bowing down Wink. Pre emptive meds will of course, possibly have occured to you after two fun pregnancies...
MurderofGoths It's a pest The Scourge likes to return in the evenings.
Meerka Lol, Grin The Sisterbood of the Sickbucket.
Chaffinch Glad tonic water is safe, now that's something I never thought of trying, but I think one woman on here at least swore by it when nothing else was bearable, now I think of it...
Sally Twenty third? I do so hope baby is early, with all this pain and breathing problems. You poor poor thing, I do hope it's not long now.
Jen If baby arrived on Valentine's Day it would be appropriate, as you and OH are still in the honeymoon stage. That heartburn can provoke puking, it's dismal.
Tallyra Welcome back. I hope it's just a glitch, there are a lot of puking bugs about.
Livingzuid Welcome back, and it's so nice you're enjoying your lifestyle. You deserve it.
I hope SliceofLime Frillypig Punk and Everyone is keeping 'hydrated' and apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Hi exquisite also try barley sugar sweets. They help so much with the taste my mum now sends me regular supplies.

Thanks lucinda :) been a bit quiet but I am as busy not working as I was when working. Strange,!

Oh meerka my bump was so achey too last weekend it was so strange. Now I get the odd twinge but I think (hope) there was a major growth spurt! Your 1cm a day sounds exciting :)

Fingers crossed the baby arrives soon sally

livingzuid · 10/01/2014 08:48

Morning all just a quick check in. Baby was doing breast stroke :) I have put on 5 kilos Shock. Bump size measured normal. My blood pressure has gone up from 135/85 to 135/90 I am still in normal range but at the top end so have to go back in 4 weeks. Gynaecologist said not to worry at this stage. And not to go back to work Grin just to keep up the swimming.

Waiting now to get an appointment with the psychiatrist who I haven't heard from since 7 weeks which he was a bit shocked by! Also the latest blood tests didn't pick up my lithium which is a first for me. So I'm at the point of wondering why I'm putting this into my body if it's not there.

But the main thing is that the baby is fine and all looks good. Placenta etc all in the right place, heart beating, everything normal. It's so surreal to see it on the screen or is that just me?

Desperate for something to eat feeling sick if I don't but hopefully will be out of here soon.

LucindaE · 10/01/2014 09:24

Livingzuid I'm glad the baby had enough space to copy you and do some swimming Grin. Where does your mother get those barley sugars, as a matter of interest? They do so help with the taste, but they are so hard to get hold of these days. I believe Meerka has a special supply, too!
I hope Everyone is managing to keep them there ketones down.

good morning. sickness a bit better today, though man I could use a break from the taste in my mouth. Started getting toothache too from all the sweets, good as they are. Hope everyone is surviving. Rather hoping -not- to hear from Sally too for a day or two, cause it will hopefully mean the Bean is moving out :)

Livingzuid english friend ordered the ginormous bag of Barley Sugars from amazon actually. Come to think of it I could send you some too if you like, honestly, no way can I eat all these.

15 weeks and 4 days to go.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 10/01/2014 10:05

28 down 39 in total to C-section = 11 to go. and it's going s.....l......o......w........

tevin · 10/01/2014 10:22

Just popping in to ask if anyone here has been able to get pre emptive anti emetics from their gp?

I had a termination of a v unexpected pregnancy at 7 weeks last year as I ended in hospital twice taking everything going and still vomiting but no one mentioned taking anti emetics pre emptively until I saw the consultant afterwards.

I had anti emetics in both my other 2 pregnancies and although they worked I was still vomiting everyday and it wasn't until I saw the consultant that I realised treatment could start before the sickness - first 2 times I was refused anything until I ended up being admitted for dehydration.

I didn't want to terminate but was so so ill I couldn't withstand the pressure from family any longer and I'm wondering if taking anti emetics before getting sick would help in the future?

I hope no one is upset by this post or minds me asking.

MurderOfGoths · 10/01/2014 10:26

tevin I believe you can, I haven't as both my pregnancies were surprises so the vomiting was the first thing I knew about being pregnant. But I'm sure I read the advice was to give them pre-emptively if you have a history of HG?

tevin · 10/01/2014 10:36

All of mine have been unplanned Blush but first two times I noticed a missed period a good 2 or 3 weeks before the sickness started, with the terminated one I started vomiting before I was 'late' but after my period should have started iyswim. I know i'd need to be v quick to start anti emetics before the sickness!

I just wondered if it's a realistic possibility rather than theory before I approach my gp.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 10/01/2014 10:50

it is realistic - your GP would probably start you on 1st level stuff ie cyclizine, may be harder to get the good stuff ie ondansatron, but you can motor through the pills

SliceOfLime · 10/01/2014 10:56

Well I managed to eat some fruit and raisins which has helped with the problem I mentioned before Blush I'm sure you all wanted to know that...! I'm managing to enjoy drinking plain hot water, never liked it before but I can sip a whole mugful which I think is really helping hydrate. Haven't been sick in a couple of days but the nausea and retching continue.

Exquisite you are so brave! I'm on my second hg pregnancy and waited 2 years to ttc again - I can't believe you have a 3yo and 2yo too I'd love to have three but if I survive this it will take me even longer to want to ttc again, I'm thinking a 10 year gap would be good?!

Must add barley sugar sweets to shopping list. Finally got some lemon lollipops today problem is trying eat them without dd wanting one...

SliceOfLime · 10/01/2014 10:58

tevin I'm so sorry you had such a difficult experience last year. Definitely worth talking to your GP in advance, and if he/ she isn't helpful then hopefully you can see another one til you find someone sympathetic.

tevin · 10/01/2014 12:01

My gp surgery were really supportive with the termination and moved me through the anti emetics really quickly. It just seems that starting once I'm vomiting already is too late for me.

I will definately chat to them about taking anti emetics before symptoms appear though and see how supportive they are. I assume you start before even any nausea (although I only really get that with the vomiting) but maybe if I'm planning a pregnancy i'd be able to get a positive result as soon as possible rather than waiting for symptoms?

It won't be for at least a year though - I'm in awe of those of you who get through it with a toddler! DC2 is 2 and those few weeks I had were absolute hell I can't imagine how I'd have done 9 months.

jenpatnim · 10/01/2014 12:08

Hey all. Exquisite - I am in awe at you doing this a third time. I hope it isn't as bad for you this time. My MIL (to be) keeps telling me that every pregnancy is different and that I may not be sick if I do it again (she wants more grandchildren) but that does not seem to be the experience of this board.

Tevin - I am so sorry you had to go through that. I don't think there is a person here on this board who didn't wonder if it was worth the suffering to carry on... and there was at least one other poster who made the decision that you did. We understand completely and no judgement.

I can't help much with the pre-emptive meds - it seems like it is a case of your mileage may vary - meaning that there is a huge variation of responses from doctors and hospitals to this. Some are sympathetic, some dismissive, and everything in between. I have had ondansetron since week 8 but I can gather I have been very lucky to have been given it so freely.

I am now at week 35 - so 5 weeks to go. I have been sleeping late and trying to take it easy as much as possible. I am definitely tired a lot, and the bump is heavy and awkward. I am looking forward to not being pregnant any more. And not being nauseated. Please.

tevin · 10/01/2014 12:18

Thanks sliceoflime it was a really tough time (still finding it hard to believe it was all real!) but hg is really tough too so I want to try and make sure I could cope.

Best wishes to all of you x

livingzuid · 10/01/2014 12:31

I found the first batch of barley sugar sweets at Leigh Delamere services on the M4 in whsmith Grin they are in those tins for travelling sweets and were buy 1 get 1 free so perhaps all whsmiths have them? My mum gets them from her local sweet shop.

meerka I've got a great supply at the moment so if I run low I'll let you know :) they are so easy to get through aren't they?

jen that's so exciting not long to go. Hope you are getting enough R&R.

tevin no words of wisdom just so sorry you had to go through that.

lime I ate a whole bag of yoghurt coated raisins (the little boxes that come from Hema with the two kids on meerka - a whole bag Blush) and I think had the same experience as you. But they taste sooooo good and hey whatever works....it makes my nausea worse when my digestive system doesn't want to work.

Meerka · 10/01/2014 12:34

HIya tevin

it sounds a really good idea to start them early - whether they would encourage you to take them before even you're preg I dunno? But cyclizine and B6 are pretty damn harmless and you could work up as needed when the sickness kicks in?

Research has shown that pre-emptive meds, or meds as soon as the nausea even begins to sink in, actualy do tend to stop things progressing to the worst. Course, there's always some women just go through sheer bloody hell with it, but with most it helps soften the awfulness.

it sounds like your doctor is pretty supportive? (yay). If not, could you get in touch with the consultant again maybe, say you're thinking of another and could you plan the meds in advance?

jen I feel for ya, same here though its quite a bit easier at week 24 than week 35! about what your MIL says, well yes each preg is different but the doctor at Preg Sickness Support helpline, who has done reseach on the whole miserable business, says that if you get it once you're 80% likely to get it again. So ... ye.
