Teachers maternity pay query

Just wondering, whilst on maternity leave are you still entitled to go up an M level if it falls during your leave?

I'm going on maternity leave end of March, I'm currently M4 Outer London pay. I'll be off a year, so from September will I have in theory been moved to M5 or do they wait until you return?

You can move up the at scale whilst on ML- or at least you could.

Check with your school, as the payscales have now been all but dissolved. However, if you were dues a pay rise for any reason, you cannot be denied this for being on ML, as that would be discrimination.

You need to discuss how your schools performance management cycle works when your on maternity leave as this is what will link to the new pay scales within your school (or should anyway!) If you can prove you've demonstrated the requirements to move up a pay scale you should be entitled to. If your not there to demonstrate doing so I imagine you may not be able to move up...

With the new performance related pay; I checked and if you're on ml for most of the year, they have to assume that you've met your perf. management targets and thus will go up to the next bracket.
I hope to God I'm right, anyway. ..

You are right, Summer- if a school tries to assert what ickle says, then they are in breach of the Equality Act, as this would directly discriminate against pregnant employees.

In the same way, you must be given the opportunity to apply for promotions etc. whilst on ML.

Just had a performance management observation and I got outstanding, the next obs is due in June but I won't be there. I think therefore I'm entitled to go up based on new scale? Im not sure to be honest

I just assumed pay wd be kept on same scale - I go back next sept. Our school is keeping 12-13 pay and conditions. Does that mean I'll go up? Would be to m4 (pleeeeeassse!!)

noblegiraffe · 01/12/2013 12:05

You automatically went up when I was on ML 4 years ago, but with pay and conditions changing, it would be worth checking with HR. If everyone else is automatically going up the pay scale, then they can't discriminate against you for being on ML.

Yy, rule of thumb: if you would have got it were you not on ML, you should get it on ML.
