Painting a cot....

I have bought nice bargain cot on eBay - it's modern but a bit dark for my case so I want to paint it.
All paints are lead free now a days so do I really have to buy a specific organic nursery paint?
On the basis that the cheapest nursery woodwork paint I can find is £30 a litre... Obviously I'll pay it if other paints are going to harm the baby who I suppose is fairly likely to chew the sides of the cot but......

Baby will almost definitely chew the sides of the cot, so personally I would pay for it.

i was researching this the other day actually... apparently there is a specific standard that paint has to reach to be classed as "toy standard" which is what the nursery paint is... basically means it's safe if babies chew it

farrow and ball paint meets it, although i'm not sure that's any cheaper
