Early scan and measuring small

I have been having really bad low cramps and pressure after urinating since before I found out I was pregnant. Been diagnosed by doctor as UTI, given antibiotics then stopped after urine test came back clear. Cramps still ongoing (now since 11th Nov)
This week was sent up to EPAS for a scan to check everything, my LMP was 12th October so I should be 6+6 but they said from the scan they could see a sac and fetal pole but looked more like '5 weeks at a push' thats what the sonographer said. I know dates are not an exact science but worried that nearly 2 weeks is quite a big discrepancy Sad
All theyve said is to take painkillers and they are bringing me back in 2 weeks for a viability scan.
Anyone had any similar situation or just a bit of handholding while I worry myself for the next two weeks?

I had a scan at 7+1, dead sure of my dates, they could find a sac and a yolk and told me i was measuring small. I've had 3 mc so i prepared myself for the worst. They told me to come back in 2 weeks, and bingo baby & heartbeat, measuring absolutely spot on. They reckon that it must have been the angle, she did struggle to get a proper view at 7 weeks even with dildo cam.
Try and relax, although i know that it's easier said than done.

I need handholding too. Except all that showed on my scan was a well-positioned sac. Have a viability scan next Friday - guess, I need to prepare myself for the worst.

Thanks qazxc , they seemed to get a picture straight away and were sure of what they were seeing so not sure if the bad angle is applicable here but I am hoping in two weeks will miraculously be caught up

Holding your hand Doctor Hope all goes well on Friday

It might be the measurement being off by a couple of mm's or else your dates. You could have ovulated later than you think and they date by LMP so there is a discrepancy but it is nothing to worry about. Were you always regular 4 week cycles? In two weeks all will be clear and unfortunately there isn't anything you can do in the meantime. Good luck.

Same happened to me had two early scans due to bleeding. Third scan this week I was prepared for the worst as they said last week I should be measuring bigger. Then this week baby doubled in size and a heartbeat. I'm 7 weeks. So dates aren't an exact science

Love and hugs x

She got the sac and yolk straight away, but couldn't see the baby hence the routing around with dildo cam. At seven weeks i thought you'd see a bean and poss a heartbeat, that's why i was so sure all was lost. so fingers crossed you also get good news in two weeks.

I'm in the same boat as you. Thought I was six weeks, went for private early scan due to spotting, measured at four weeks and too early to determine viability. Same confirmed at EPU two days later. Bloods are going the right way, but got repeat scan on 9th. Best of luck to you. x

I had scans at 6 and 7 weeks that showed precisely nothing apart from the fact that there was a sac and something in it. Was told to expect the worst! My gp said there would be no point scanning before 8 weeks because it can be very hard to see anything and the heartbeat is absolutely not guaranteed to be seen as early as six or seven weeks. Fast forward to 13 weeks and we have a happy wriggler and I could punch the stupid songrapher who caused so much stress at 7 weeks.

Just because you don't see much this early doesn't mean there is no hope. Many women don't see anything until at least 8 or 9 weeks. It's worth waiting a bit.

I had this,Going by lmp I should have been 10 weeks pregnant, dildo cam said 6 weeks. Big difference and from someone who had a previous miscarriage terrifying.
Ds is 4 months now Grin
I can only think it was delayed ovulation.
Good thoughts to you.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 01/12/2013 08:36

@living - my sonographer wasn't quite that negative. Almost though. My approach now is hope for the best: expect the worst.

livingzuid · 01/12/2013 09:51

donna I'm in the Netherlands where being overly blunt is something they take great pride in Grin I had a mc back in Feb so it was terrifying and awful to be told that. The thing was we went back the next day and another gynaecologist said it was just too early and so much easier to see things at 8-9 weeks. It's not medical guidance here apparently to tell you about a suspected mc unless they are 100% sure and 2 people have looked. So much changes in the early weeks so fast which is why they need to give it more time. It's so hard though I know - I had too wait six more weeks!

My personal view now after this roller coaster is that unless there's blood there is no point going in so early. It just adds to the stress if they can't see anything.

Fingers crossed all will be fine at your next scan :)

DoctorDonnaNoble · 01/12/2013 10:06

It's certainly my view for the future too.
