Hi all,

Right, here goes. I got my first of several BFPs last Tuesday (19th Nov) on CD40. Needless to say, we are over the moon. Going purely by the date of my last period (12th Oct), I had it in my head that I was six weeks gone.

Early this afternoon, I went to the toilet and to my horror, discovered that I was bleeding slightly. Old blood initially, then a tiny amount of fresh looking blood. I called my husband in a tearful panic and we headed for A&E. They were really understanding, but basically told me to expect the worst. To add to the blow, the only early pregnancy clinic doesn't have an appointment until this Thursday. We walked home with heavy hearts. I called my ward sister to explain what happened (I'm meant to be working tonight) and she gave me the idea of going for a private scan, which we did.

According to the scan, I must have ovulated late as it only appears that I am four weeks gone. Owing to this, it is far too early to tell if it is viable and I have to go back in two weeks to confirm. All looks normal for four weeks though, so fingers crossed.

I haven't experienced any pain with the bleeding, and the bleeding appears to have now stopped.

So, here are my questions:

  1. Given the information, dates wise, is it plausible that I am four weeks (as opposed to being six weeks and the baby has stopped developing - this I'm worried about)

  2. If I am four weeks, has anybody else experienced bleeding at this point and what were the outcomes?

Sincere apologies for the essay. Any help will be so so gratefully received. I just want to know either way. xx

Hi there. I had bleeding at (what I thought was) 6w3d. Bright red, lots of it, and painless. First scan showed two sacs, no heartbeat, yolk sac etc in either and two weeks later, still spotting and off in that time, one of the sacs had disappeared but the other is now nearly 2 and gorgeous. At the second scan they put my dates back 10 days.

It is possible that you could have got a BFP last Tuesday and still be only 4 weeks gone, give or take a couple of days. Do you know when you ovulated? Are you temping or anything? And painless bleeding at four weeks, could be a mc of course but also many many women get early pregnancy bleeding and everything goes on to be fine. It's very hard to date a pregnancy on scan (in fact, impossible as there are no markers for development) when there is only the gestational sac present.

In short, although this time is bloody agonising, they have seen something on scan, you haven't had pain or clots and those are all positive signs. Don't go back to work until you've had seven bleed free days and expect to bleed more over the next few days at least. Best of luck and pls update us if you feel able x

Hi,

Firstly, sorry to hear about your loss Thanks but thank goodness you have a healthy dc.

I've had a few mild cramps this morning (I've had these since being pregnant) and just a tiny bit of old blood this morning. I'm freaking out though because my boobs aren't as sore Confused this is such a nightmare.

I have a scan at my local early pregnancy unit tomorrow morning, so fingers crossed I will see my little mustard seed again Smile

I've taken the rest of the week of work, although I feel guilty about doing so. I know it's for the best and I need to be a bit selfish.

Thanks so so much for taking the time to reply, will keep you posted. x

Hi, hope you're doing well.
Just wanted to say I started to bleed at 4/5 weeks, went to docs and all they could do is tell me to come back on two weeks if got a positive test and then they would do a scan. Had a scan 2 weeks later (still bleeding) and could see baby's heartbeat. Currently 29 weeks and baby seems to be perfectly healthy..... Doesn't stop the worrying though :) xx

I also had a bleed at 5 weeks which lasted two days and then brown spotting for a week! Very worrying- thought I had lost it! I'm currently 17!weeks and had plenty of scans and I heard the heart beat for the first time this week

Have plenty of rest, will be thinking of uThanks

I bled from about 4 weeks to 8 weeks with dd1. Usually brown spotting but a few times fresh blood and once even quite heavy. I was told to prepare for the worst but that all still looked fine. Luckily all was fine and the rst of the pregnancy was uneventful.

Unfortunately it's just a game of wait and see, there's nothing you can do. If you can, try to take your mind off it - I tortured myself for nothing!

Good luck, I hope it's all going well.
