Back's gone ... :-(

I'm 18 weeks pregnant and my back went last night going upstairs to bed.

In a way I was expecting it as have had back problems before, but had no warnings this time, and feeling upset. Partly because I'm still throwing up occasionally and as I am now I'm terrified of that. Will be hard even to get to a bowl and just owwww. Can barely move.

Does anybody have any advice to share? Have been planning pregnancy Pilates, but was waiting until the nausea passed, and anyway I think I now need to start slower than that, maybe a physio or osteo? Has anybody found their GP can do anything? Mine couldn't when my back went pre pregnancy, and I can't really see that pregnancy is going to change that, but is it worth giving my mw a ring, or just tell her at my next appointment?

Thanks for any advice. Feeling sad and a bit scared.

I wouldnt bother contacting the midwife as its not something to do with baby/pregnancy iykwim.

Definitely speak to your gp, they may be able to refer you to physio, who will be able to set you up with a support belt & excercises and a list of do's and dont's. They are normally quite quick with pregnancy referrals.

However, if its bad (can hardly move) then probably quickest thing is to see an osteopath or physio privately.

In the mean time, paracetamol, warm bath, hot water bottle and rest is about all you can do unfortunately.

Ok thanks! Hardly able to move now. If I heal at a similar rate to last time I hope by Tuesday I should be able to get out of the house though, so will try to get a GP and/or physio appointment then. Really I mainly want to avoid this happening again, as it's not going to get any easier as I get more pregnant. I am only just showing so just didn't expect this so soon.

Oh poor you! I don't know much about back problems in pregnancy but as a chronic back pain sufferer myself I can empathise with you.
Can you say a bit more about exactly what has happened? Has your back gone into spasm? Have you tried holding a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel on it? It can really help with inflammation, ten mins on and then ten mins off. Deep tissue massage and acupuncture can be helpful too. Best wishes.

Not sure, but very sudden lower back pain while walking up stairs (had handbag in one hand and coughed) and have been in pain and struggling to move since. I think it is a spasm, everything is very tense. Will try ice, as it does feel hot and my OH has lots of ice packs for his terrible knees!

The original incident was not as bad as the one I had a few months ago (which left me trapped on the floor twice) but feels like the same category of problem, if you know what I mean. Went to see osteo last time, who was good, but I really want to find somebody who can help me strengthen sensibly in a safe way for pregnancy, so it doesn't get worse as I get bigger. Luckily in London so not hard to find somebody, just hard to know who the right person is!

Thanks for the support xx

Have you tried pilates or yoga for pregnant women? Sure you will find something suitable in London. Really feel for you, I had booked a flight to India last year and my back went picking up a bloody box when I was moving out of my flat! I had to postpone my flight twice as I could hardly walk and I spent a fortune on different treatments over the next 6 weeks! Hope you feel better soon. X

Not yet, because I've been too nauseous. But certainly intend to give it a go when I can move a bit better! There are a few classes around, though none of the times are very convenient for work :-(
