Personal question: Weight Gain

I understand this is a sensitive question! I'm worried I've put on too much too soon. With dd1 I put on 3 stone by the end (lost it all in 2months). But I'm concerned I'm heading for the same weight gain with dd2. I'm 18+4 and have put on 11/12lbs, starting weight 8st4lbs. My appetite has definitely increased! I'm trying to be sensible, I walk and do yoga.

Question is, is weight gain in 1st pregnancy indicative of subsequent pregnancies?

I would say so, I put on 3 and half stone in all 3 pregnancies no matter how careful I was, my body just naturally seems to hang on to it when pregnant, I'm normally a size 10

LittlePeaPod · 23/11/2013 08:41

I thought each pregancy was individual. I was a size 8/10 and I am 34 weeks and so far I have put on 14lb 6oz. But my SIL (size8/10 normally) but on about 4stone with her first lost it all and went back to pre pregnancy weight and then she put on about 2 stone 7lb with her second.

Writerwannabe83 · 23/11/2013 08:50

I'm 22 weeks and was last weighed when I was 20 weeks by my midwife. When I was at 20 weeks I had put on about 7lbs, I was very surprised by this. I don't keep scales in the house so can't really monitor it myself.

heidihole · 23/11/2013 08:51

I put on masses first time. What a piglet I turned into! Lost it before this pregnancy and this time I'm using this calculator to track my gain

www.thebabycorner.com/tools/pregnancy/calculators/weightcalculator.php

It helps rein me in a bit!

MaryAnnTheDasher · 23/11/2013 09:11

I put on loads with first 2 and plan to put on loads with my third and enjoy every bit of eating what I want!

RandomMess · 23/11/2013 09:15

I found the amount I put on was different each time but by the end of the pregnancy I weighed the same each time - so I ended up around 10 - 10.5 stone so the first time I put on 4 stone the other times far less as I started off heavier.

I was the heaviest when I had my largest baby inlcuding a whopping placenta and long thick rope like umbillical cord Grin

Tea1Sugar · 23/11/2013 09:51

Woop! I've been harsh on myself, the scales weren't set to 0 properly so have put on 10lbs not 12lbs :-) Small things!!

I used to be quite hung up on my weight, so I've completely stayed clear from the scales so I can just enjoy being pregnant.

Romily · 24/11/2013 11:03

With my first pregnancy I gained about 4 stone (maybe a bit more) and this time at 29 weeks I have gained 1 and a half stone so I am hopeful not to gain as much this time.

After I had my daughter I lost one of the stones pretty much on the day I gave birth and then a couple of stone over the next few weeks as a lot of it was fluid. The rest needed a bit of effort to shift but I was in no rush.

If you are worried don't google it just ask your HCPs if they are content with the amount you are putting on. Everyone is different and they are the ones in the know.

MissCalamity · 24/11/2013 14:20

I put on a stone and a half with DS, however I am considered overweight with my BMI. Lost a stone more or less after birth but it took bloody ages to lose the other half!

Currently 18 weeks with DC2 and not yet put on any weight due to being sick, so fingers crossed this can go the same way (apart from taking ages to loose the last bit of weight)

Everyone is different; and unless you're scoffing 6 cream cakes every day I wouldn't worry too much about it! Grin

2 stones with 1st pregnancy.
4 stone with 2nd baby.

Got 2 stone off in 8 months, another 2 to go.

My own fault for following a 9 month Cadbury diet.

MirandaWest · 24/11/2013 14:28

I put on 4.5 stone in both pregnancies.

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 24/11/2013 14:31

I put on more ( stone more) at second pregnancy.

But lost it when baby was born, just ... Somehiw ( am not a dieter)

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 24/11/2013 14:33

With DD1 I gained about 2stone. With DD2 I lost my appetite entirely and ended up, after she was born, weighing a stone less then before I was pregnant, so completely different.

StormBird · 24/11/2013 15:36

I'm a size 16 (average apparently Hmm and I'm tall)when not pg but I seem to put very little on when im up the duff... I put 8lb on with my first and I'm currently 40+3 annd so far I've put 10.5lb on!!!! it's prob cos I was a podge to begin with Blush

wispaxmas · 24/11/2013 15:46

I think every pregnancy is different, unless you have the same eating and exercise habits as before. My SIL put on about twice as much in her second pregnancy because she was bedridden!

I'm only 12+4, and even though I've not had much nausea at all in the first trimester I have only gained maybe 1-2lbs so far. I know most of the weight gain is later anyways, but I had expected far worse! I'm overweight, though (28.5BMI), so not supposed to gain more than 15-25lbs in the whole pregnancy! I am doing my absolute best to stick to it!

lljkk · 24/11/2013 15:58

I put on most in the 3rd of 4 pregnancies, so closer to 3 stone than 2. it was all gone mighty quick after the birth, I don't know how anyone who starts pregnancy a healthy weight manages to gain less than 2 stone (Full Term, anyway).

sdaisy26 · 24/11/2013 18:54

Last time I put on about 3 stone & found a stone & 1/2 came off very easily, the rest really didn't. Finally lost it all in the first trimester this time as so sick. Am really hoping to put on closer to 2 stone this time around but I'm going to need to rein in my eating for that to happen. Tomorrow, I promise.

Cariad007 · 24/11/2013 18:55

When I last weighed myself at around 24 weeks I'd put on just under 5lbs. That was 5 weeks ago and I don't know how much I've put on since - perhaps another 4-5 but clearly not enough as my bump is measuring small for dates so I have to have a growth scan next week. I'm tall though and used to do about 7-8 aerobics classes a week pre-pregnancy and still do about 5 a week now, so hopefully it's jus strong stomach muscles holding baby in.

Frizz1986 · 24/11/2013 21:41

I am 33 weeks and have put on 2 1/2 stone. People have said that I don't look like I've put on any weight except the bump and they think I actually look better than I ever have. My bump is measuring perfect for dates but i am really not too worried how much i put on. As long as baby seems ok any weight gain can be lost again. I had lost 4 stone before i got pregnant as I was overweight so I know its possible and I hope to breastfeed which i hear helps a lot.
Am sure a midwife would say if they thought you were putting on too much.

TheFantasticFixit · 24/11/2013 21:51

Had hyperemesis at beginning of this pregnancy (no.2) so lost about 9lbs - have now put 6lbs back on, am 24 weeks

Cucumberscarecrow · 24/11/2013 21:56

I put on almost three stone in both pregnancies. Went from 8st2lbs to 10st10lbs first time. Second pregnancy went from 8st8lbs to 11st2lbs. I lost all the weight within six months and am now a year post-partum and really struggling to keep above 8st.

Moral of the story: relax and enjoy. You had a low starting weight so your body is just doing what it needs to do. It is unnerving to see fast weight gain but I bet the scales will be doing the same thing but in reverse post-baby.

Good luck!

littleoaktree · 24/11/2013 21:57

1.5st with first pg, 2st with second pg. the difference I think was that I had bad spd second time and so barely walked anywhere that I didn't have to.

Took longer to lose it second time but not sure if that's because it was a second pg or because I'd put on more iyswim.
