I'm having this procedure done tomororow am I right assuming it's the same as a transvaginal scan? Is there anything I should know about or prepare for? How long does it take?

I had one at 14+6, was just a transvaginal scan, nothing to worry about. Afterwards she switched to the normal ultrasound and we had a quick look at baby too.

I have another one at 21 weeks then I think another at 24, if my measurements are still ok then i'll be discharged from that clinic I think.

I had one through my tummy at 17 and 26 weeks so it might be transvaginal.

McBaby that's interesting I'm 17 weeks.

Yes, it's just a regular transvaginal scan. I've had dozens of the things over the years (the joy of a true incompetent cervix!) You can't normally see much of baby (although you are still quite early so you may as baby is small) and they always have a quick look at baby abdominally too. Usually abdominal first, then they get you to empty your bladder before the internal, but places vary.

Sometimes they are done transabdominally but these are not always accurate and they're only done that way if there is no suspicion of there being any issue. If it looks short transabdominally, they switch to transvaginally. For instance the first time mine was measured, they thought it looked to be 10-20mm transabdominally which was a concern, then they checked transvaginally a few minutes later and it turned out to be 3mm.

However if you are there solely for a cervical length check or if there are any risk factors or concerns, it will be the dildocam. Sorry!!

I've had them every 2-3 weeks since 12 weeks - now nearly 33. Also had them regularly when pregnant with DS2 and DS3 (I have a very short cervix). IME they've always been transvaginal, but TBH you just get on with it; dignity goes out the window the minute you PO that first S Grin
