Anti-depressants in Pregnancy

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody knows about the safety of taking AD's during pregnancy.

I take a low dose AD (Trimpramine 25mg) once every other day, or at least I did until I got a positive pregnancy test.

One of the major symptoms of my PND was insomnia and after faffing around with various different AD's we finally found one that really works well.

Trouble is, is that I have gone cold turkey and the insomnia is back with a vengeance - On the one hand I am afraid that lack of sleep will trigger my depression again but on the other I am worried about the effects on the baby...

Any wise mumsnetters out there with experience on this one?

Hi dejags,

Can't help you with the name of a specific anti-d for use in pregnancy but I do know they exist. I had severe PND with ds1 and when I was pregnant with ds2 my consultant suggested I start anti-d's towards the end of my pregnancy "just in case" . See your GP - you were right to stop when you found out you were pregnant, just in case Trimpramine isn't safe but yyou should investigate an alternative - as you're finding out, going cold turkey isn't a good idea.

Good luck xx

I know that prozac is mild enough to take while pregnant, It worked well for me.

Hi,
I was perscribed fluoxetine, a prozact type AD at 17 weeks pregnant. I did some research on the internet before I started taking it and the only side effects I could find were;
Possible low birth weight
Possible early birth
Agitated baby for 1 week after birth.
There were no known increases in birth defects.
My doctor spoke to a phyciatrist and he recommended that one.
Hope this helps

No experience, sorry. But I've looked into breastfeeding and ADs and found some stuff on pregnancy: Here is an overview (very little on pregnancy, but it's a starting point). Trimipramine is a tricyclic drug, right? I found this also.

One thing that happened during my pregnancy (not depression related) resulted in me having to take a class C (unknown effect) drug. The harm in not taking the drug was greater than the possible effect of it. (A friend of ours who had been staying with us came down with bacterial meningitis, nearly died, a few days after leaving our house. It was contagious and we took prophylactic drugs.) Depression can have an enormous impact on the wellbeing of the pregnant mother and therefore, her baby. Taking ADs might be indicated, esp at a low dose.

The person to ask, though, is Rhubarb. Her site had run away , but... nope, it's still gone. You can email her through contact another talker and she'll give you info on this, I'm sure.

Hi dejags
I'm 13 plus weeks pg, and taking prozac. No worries. Tried to cut down, but just went loopy. I think a calm mum must have a good influence on the baby.
Also, helps with depression associated with SPD pain.

I am 7 weeks preg and taking a tricyclic called prothiaden which i have been on for 7yrs. trying to cut sown and finding it very hard. Doc says won't harm baby. You have to view depression like any other illness and it's not your fault you have it!. I had a friend who had epilepsey and she had to stay on med through preg and baby was fine
