Why can't I eat smoked salmon pate?

They are selling it in little packets with biscuits in M & S. I really want to eat some. I can't believe it can do any harm.

Does it make any difference if they call it mousse rather than pate?

Also, I've just read that cold meats are now OK. Sure that wasn't fine last time (5 years ago).

Because of the risk of listeria associated with all pâté products, including fish & veggie.

To be honest, if it's fresh & from a reputable source (big supermarket) it's minimal risk, but listeria can lead to miscarriage so it's weighing up that little risk against a significant outcome.

Personally if I was really craving it, I'd buy the salmon pate, eat on day of purchase and throw any remaining away to avoid temptation tomorrow.

I had a huge craving for smoked mackerel pâté a few weeks ago. Am sure would have been fine to buy, but in the end no made my own - hot smoked mackerel fillets, cream cheese and lemon juice in the blender. Was absolutely yum. Personally, I think the risk from bought pâté is minimal but if you want to be on the safe side, could try this with hot smoked salmon.
