I only like steak meduim rare. I'm 5 months and due April I don't think I can wait that long for a juicy steak arghhhhh.

I'm not really sure if u can eat it but not sure of dangers either.

A well done steak won't cut it :(

I craved steak, broccoli and coleslaw with DS and had it virtually every day. Never did me any 'arm... apart from bankruptcy

GiraffeAHolic · 16/11/2013 11:55

As long as the meat is sealed around the outside, you can have medium rare steak.

SweetPea86 · 16/11/2013 11:57

You have just made my day grabs car keys, off the the shops

THANK YOU xxx

I think as long as it's not really rare to the point of still being cold in the middle, a med-rare steak is dandy! Or go for a cut of beef which is better when more cooked, like a rib eye which is best at medium?

I am 35wks and had an absolutely amazing steak last week - was so good I can't stop thinking about it. I ordered it medium and it was delicious!!

hettienne · 16/11/2013 11:58

The bacteria will be on the outside, so long as the outside is well cooked then go for it.

MrsBungleScare · 16/11/2013 11:59

I are loads of medium rare steak when pregnant!

FamiliesShareGerms · 16/11/2013 12:00

When are your next bloods due? Maybe need to get your iron levels looked at, based on the theory that your body craves what it is lacking.

Meanwhile, enjoy your steak!

MsUumellmahaye · 16/11/2013 12:04

Current advice seems to be they're not sure, but are looking into it Hmm

The Department of Health previously advised that it was fine to eat whole cuts of beef and lamb rare, as long as the outside had been properly cooked. As a precaution, this advice has now been removed while a food safety committee (The Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food) looks into the issue of toxoplasmosis.

heidihole · 16/11/2013 12:29

I've eaten steak as normal thru both pregnancies.

I also still cross the road in pregnancy even tho there is a tiny risk of being struck by a car.

Inglori0us · 16/11/2013 12:46

I actually wanted to chew on a raw beef joint the other day, it looked that appealing to me.
I've had a few medium steaks. Personally I think it's fine.

Philoslothy · 16/11/2013 12:49

I am on pregnancy number five, ate lots of medium rare steak throughout .

Cariad007 · 16/11/2013 16:53

I was craving steak tartare the other day but alas that's a big no on two counts!!

greentshirt · 16/11/2013 16:59

Ha Cariad I love steak tartare! I havent had steak at all being pregnant, I like it very rare or blue and for me there's no point in it otherwise! I may have a bit of rare beef at xmas, we get a big fresh joint from a farm so hope thats ok? I cant work out where the risk really lies with toxoplasmosis so probably more sensible to give it a miss. Still considering it though!

brettgirl2 · 16/11/2013 17:09

Freezing the steak for a few days is meant to kill the parasite anyway.

Stevie77 · 16/11/2013 17:35

Is it just beef and lamb? What about other meats that are often served pink, like duck?

Rhianna1980 · 16/11/2013 17:44

Fillet steak is still nice when made well done. It def not as as nice medium but it's still good. You have to buy fillet steak though and pay more but it's so worth it yum yum

greentshirt · 16/11/2013 18:19

Nahhh Rhianna, nothing is good as a dripping rare steak! lol

AnythingNotEverything · 16/11/2013 18:34

The advice has changed recently. Check the NHS guidance.

It's entirely up to you - I felt the risk was low, but the stakes (sorry) we're very high. Toxoplasmosis is not to be sniffed at. Due to polyhydramnios I was tested for toxo (and other things) and it was a very long weekend waiting for the results. I was glad I could confidently say I'd done everything I could to protect both of us.

Anecdotal advice that other people have been fine is not evidence.

volvocowgirl · 16/11/2013 18:37

Oh, I really want a steak too now!

badfurday · 17/11/2013 10:09

I have had steak medium throughout my pregnancy. Saturday is our steak and movie night, not giving that up!
