Bleeding at 38 weeks

Hi, I'm in hospital at the moment being kept in overnight as I had some red bleeding earlier which turned to brown. It wasn't gallons but it was quite a lot and when the doctor checked me at the hospital, she saw large clots too. They don't know what it is - they don't think I'm in labour, they don't think it was a show and they don't think it's placental (praying they're right on that one). They're just keeping me in to see if I start bleeding again. Has anyone else experienced bleeding this late on or heard of anyone who has? Feeling really scared and just wish they knew why it happened.

Sorry I can't help you but just offering a hand to hold.
You're in the best place.
Try and stay positive. As long as you and baby are ok that's all that matters
Thanks

Thanks stom. I managed to get some sleep but now a woman is in pain somewhere on the ward and it woke me up. Just checked and no more blood seems to be coming at the moment. Am having a ribena to try and wake up the baby so I can feel it move, and debating whether to ask them to listen for the heartbeat again. Ooh think I just felt the baby move a little bit. The thing is I had a pregnancy massage today with someone unqualified and can't help wondering if she did something that ruptured the placenta or something, which is making me think what an absolute idiot to risk that Sad

Oh Alex how scary. How are you doing this morning?

RedundantExpat · 15/11/2013 09:08

Hope you are ok. I am sure a massage would have to be pretty vigorous to rupture a placenta. Also 38 weeks is almost there. If they had to get baby immediately it would all be fine, anyway, I am sure.

I had this OP at 10.00 a.m, and rang midwife, I went straight to hospital & they found clots.

Baby was safely delivered in the evening, things started moving very quickly at about 5.00pm,

I was 39 weeks. All fine, best of luck to you xxxxx

Hope you're okay OP.

Please make sure they monitor you and the baby properly, not to scare you but when I had bleeding that late in pregnancy it was due to placental abruption (ended well and safe with my DD now aged 4).

Alexandra6 · 15/11/2013 14:03

Thanks all, the midwife doesn't think it was the massage but she doesn't know what it is and neither does the doctor. They have checked the baby's heartbeat again this morning, all seems fine with it and I've had movement.

They're saying it doesn't look like placenta abruption purely because I don't have a low lying placenta and I've stopped bleeding and have a soft stomach. Is that enough to know though?! And if it isn't from the womb/placenta, then what is it and how could so much suddenly come from my cervix/vagina?! stevie how did they diagnose you and what tests did they do?

lama I was really hoping it is labour but it's been about 18 hours with no labour signs. They're talking about sending me home after 24 hours without any more bleeding but am not sure whether I should push for more tests or an ultrasound scan?

Hi quod Smile Sad

Have they not done an ultrasound?! Surely that would help to diagnose where the bleed is coming from?

Alexandra6 · 15/11/2013 21:18

They haven't done an ultrasound as they said no point - they said it won't show anything and a placenta abruption isn't diagnosed by ultrasound. They have done the heart monitor on the baby (the one with the belts round the tummy) and the heartbeat was good again tonight. Just a bit more brown blood. Really hope everything is ok!
