I'm going out for lunch today and really fancy a glass of white wine!
I'm 29 weeks. Someone please tell me I'm not going to cause irreversible damage to my baby!

You'll be fine - just order it with lunch and a glass of water :-)

Thanks bumbolina, I feel like the worlds worst mother to be Blush

It's a v personal decision. I read lots about the risk and concluded a very small amount seemed safe.

I'm 38 weeks now and frankly it just makes me feel even more tired so I don't bother but beyond the first trimester I "allowed myself" a small drink once a week- sml glass wine, half lager..

Prepare to feel a bit judged in certain company though! I always sent my DH to the bar and sat somewhere discreet.

Enjoy your lunch!

Have the wine and enjoy it. Current guidelines seem to be that a couple of drinks a week are absolutely fine. xx

You aren't - really! I've been out 5-6 times this pregnancy and had a small glass of wine each time. I did the same in my first pregnancy. I think as long as you don't go overboard you'll be fine.

In fact - the night I gave birth to my dd I had a warm bath and a glass of wine, and had my first contraction in the bath Grin I'll be doing the same next week to move things along Grin

You managed to get to 29 weeks without any at all???
good for you. There's no way i'll be as restrained as that! the first thing i'll be having on day 1 of trimester 2 is a large glass of cold new zealand sauvignon blanc!
Diet coke is probably worse for the baby!!

Mim78 · 14/11/2013 10:03

I'm sure it will be absolutely fine. If you decide to have the wine make sure you enjoy it and don't feel guilty as then there is no point!

I've actually gone off alcohol altogether. I attempted a sip of wine a couple of weeks ago and it just didnt taste right. I just stick to diet coke now or water. Truth be told, i've gone off alot of my favourite foods & drinks. Confused

BummyMummy77 · 14/11/2013 14:14

Alcohol free wine? Nice idea but it's got no alcohol in it!

For my first few weeks I drank like a fish (thought ds was a hangover for quite a while :S) then stopped then hit the 2nd trimester and had a couple of glasses a week at least.

Read Emily Ostlers book on pregnancy which looks at the quality of the studies that feed evidence on guidelines. The drinking guideline is to do with fetal alcohol syndrome and you need a lot of sustained binge drinking to cause that. She could find absolutely no evidence that small to moderate levels of drinking had any effect whatsoever.

I'm in my first trimester but upon reaching twelve weeks I'll have the odd tipple knowing there's absolutely no proper evidence that it'll do any harm whatsoever.

AllieOC · 14/11/2013 15:56

I really don't see the issue with having a small glass of wine intermittently beyond the first trimester

amandine07 · 14/11/2013 19:45

Am 32 weeks & have a small glass of red wine every now and then. With alcohol I think the guidance is 1-2 units a week but it is a personal thing.

The thing is, there is no 'safe level' so I think it's best just to be sensible, stick to one glass if you fancy a tipple.
In my opinion, smoking is much more damaging- no benefits at all to the baby, or for the mother cone to think of it!

Had half a Guinness last night and must say I enjoyed it! Did feel quite drunk though as was first drink for 26 weeks!
