Very early scan

My midwife has just booked a scan for me for tomorrow due to some light bleeding. I'll only be 5wks 3days gone. What (if anything) can I expect to see? The thought of seeing nothing on the screen is terrifying me

You might not see anything, you might see a sac. You wouldn't expect to see a foetal pole or heartbeat -it's way to early.

The scan will most likely be internal, btw.

Good luck.

Hi chimps. FX your scan goes ok.

I had a scan at 5w+6. We saw the sac, yolk, pole an heartbeat. I think the four additional days at this stage though makes a big difference.
Set your expectations low - so anything you do see is a bonus.

FX your bleeding is just settling/implantation.

I have had a scan that early with one of my pregnancies due to cysts, didn't see anything, just a black hole. Week later, black hole with smudge in it, no pole, no heartbeat. Did see heartbeat at 10 weeks then somersaults at 13 weeks at screening scan and on doppler at 16 weeks. Unfortutately I didn't end up with a happy ending that time but nothing to do with early problems, it is normal not to see anything at 5 weeks and they may do blood tests to check your HCG levels instead.

I agree the scan will be internal. Wear nice knickers.

FX for you x

I had an internal scan at 5+4 and saw same as jaykay. I was amazed to hear a heartbeat so early.

Good luck, I hope it all goes well.

The main thing they will be looking for is to check your pregnancy is in the right place, so they want to see a sac in the uterus. If your dates are correct you should probably see a yolk sac. A heartbeat is less likely before six weeks. They probably wont be able to tell you tomorrow if your pregnancy is viable, but they will be able to rule out ectopic pregnancy. Hopefully you will get a follow up scan two weeks later to see the heartbeat.
good luck!

I had an early scan yesterday I'm roughly 5 weeks by my dates not the date of my last period!!

They saw sack and yolk in place all healthy and normal and womb is healthy. Didn't see a heartbeat and I've been crying and worrying ever since. The hospital aren't worried and said its normal and too early to see. So I'm going back next Wednesday. But I feel sick with worry
