Pregnant with Twins

Hi all,

I could do with a bit of advice please. I am pregnant with twins and thinking about when to start my maternity leave. I am only four months at the moment so plenty of time to decide.

I am a teacher and I am getting very mixed advice as to how long I will be able to last at work. Some are saying I should go as far as 35/36 weeks but others are saying that with twins I won't be able to still be on my feet (and surrounded my teenagers all day) at that point.

This is my first pregnancy so I would appreciate you all letting me know what I am in for!

Hi and congratulations on your news. I have twin Dds aged 2. I was advised by my consultant to go on maternity leave at week 30 as there is a higher chance of early labour. I worked in an office and could be seated most of the day but in all honesty it was tiring I was huge by the time I went off. I also by that stage was having weekly appointments for antenatal clinic and had developed G diabetes so had weekly appointments for that. I think if I hadn't went on leave work would have been getting a bit fed up. I ended up being induced at week 35 so it was a good decision for me Smile

Congratulations :)

I finished at 30 weeks and could not have done another day, I was exhausted.

You may find the Multiples section on here helpful and you will get more replies to twin specific questions.

33 years ago my MIL started leave from her teaching position at 32 weeks, she says it was great as she was actually pretty ok up to 36 weeks so was able to enjoy some pampering her time, her boys arrived just after 38 weeks.
Congratulations and good luck.

I am 32+4 with twins and finished for mat leave yesterday. I left an office job where I was sat down all day. The hospital recommended starting mat leave at 28 weeks for first time twin pregnancies but I want more time when the DTs actually arrive and felt very well so took it a week at a time post 28 weeks.
I was fine to work up to yesterday but a word of warning especially if you are on your feet all day, my feet swelled up at 30 weeks and I cannot get any shoes on. They have told me to keep my feet elevated as much as possible but this will not go down until after the birth so I would say you may need to consider finishing a bit sooner.

See how you feel and ask the hospital for their advice.

Congratulations too.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I will try the multiples section too. It is so helpful to have a date in mind as work seem to think I will be still running around the school at 35 weeks and as it is my first it is difficult to say with any conviction that I think I won't!
