Hi, I'm asking for an elective csection with my 2nd baby.

Just wondered how many weeks is usual for them to do it assuming there are no major concerns for mum or baby's health, do they do it as close to your due date as possible or a bit earlier?

Just to add that my consultant said they would only do an elcs after 39 weeks but due to my previous birth if I went into labour naturally I would be priority form an emcs - don't know of that is the case for you.

Dc2's birth recovery (elcs) compared to dc1 (emcs) was a breeze!

schmalex · 09/11/2013 06:46

Planned for 39 weeks but he started arriving at 38+2 so I ended up having it then!

schmalex · 09/11/2013 06:49

takeit my previous CS was also for breech and I've been told I can now choose whether to do VBAC or ELCS this time. I have to go to VBACclinic at 24 weeks and talk through risks.

schmalex Thank you for your reply. I'm just trying to work out whether I'll have a fight on my hands being approved for a section as I've had a vbac inbetween.

I will ask the midwife and see what she says. Thanks though Smile

Thanks all, I'm just trying to avoid the exhausting 3 day labour I had last time that ended up in an em csection anyway.

If my waters broke at say 38 weeks and I wasn't showing any sign of progressing, would they still take me for section do you think?

38 + 5 but was 10 years ago. My consultant at the time said the paediatricians didnt like them any earlier unless for medical reasons, because of the babies lungs needing to be developed.

SeeYouNT · 09/11/2013 08:33

39 weeks exactly with both of mine

but a friend of mine was 37+1 - thats the earliest i have ever heard of an elective happening

ZingWantsGin · 09/11/2013 08:36

39+2

but

  • baby beeing footling breech was discovered until 36 weeks and they said the could then only book me in around 39 weeks!
  • I was booked in originally for 38+ 6, went it, waited all morning but was sent home as they could just not fit me in.
I then had the choice of any other day of that week or next week (not weekend) so I chose the Thursday because of the date and other things.

all my other kids were late, so I wasn't worried about going into labour early and the later was the better anyway - but had the baby's position been discovered earlier I would've been booked in at 38 weeks.

hth

ZingWantsGin · 09/11/2013 08:37

*was not discovered until....

MrsAFlowerpot · 09/11/2013 08:48

Booked for 39+3, then had complications due to bodged previous emcs and they looked to bring it forward...but no spaces as building work meant they were down to one booked elcs + emergencies each day. Ended up having to go in to be checked daily and had emcs (but no labour, they just decided I was now an emergency Confused) at 39+1.

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 09/11/2013 08:58

41 weeks but that was because I had not seen the consultant till the day before and she was disgusted i had not been offered a c section at 39 weeksHmm
Previous baby very large and a traumatic delivery , and ds was estimated to be extra large( I'm tiny ) but the midwifed brushed off my concerns ( good job the consultant had sense)Wink.
I've been told this time I will be booked in for exactly 39 weeks as that's the earliest they will do them if no complications

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 09/11/2013 12:35

39 wks. Booked at 36 wks. Jan 13.

terilou87 · 09/11/2013 12:55

I will be having mine at 38 weeks due to gestational diabetes and other issues but before I knew of any issues it would of been 39 weeks at the earliest. X

daughterofafarmer · 09/11/2013 16:19

Mine is book for 39wks.

Jollyb · 09/11/2013 16:30

38+6 on a Friday. I did consider switching to the Monday so I would be over 39 weeks, but this way meant that DP got an extra weekend with the baby before he returned to work.

I went to 42+0 with DD1 and thoroughly recommend the shorter pregnancy option!

NorthEasterlyGale · 09/11/2013 20:15

First was 38+3 (38 by my dates) for a breech.

Second will be at 39+4 in February.

fhdl34 · 10/11/2013 05:58

I've been told mine will be at 39 weeks but if waters go before, it'll be emcs as they won't induce me due to the rupture risk. I would hope my labour would start naturally if that happened but it didn't with dd, took 15 hours to get first contraction after waters went with her.
Good luck x

kiwiscantfly · 10/11/2013 08:56

38+1. They wanted to do it at 39 weeks but the hospital was fully booked. Cue much panicking from me at 36 weeks over Christmas 2010. I then got a phone call on the 30th saying I was booked in for five days time, very last minute!

LedaOfSparta · 10/11/2013 09:22

with baby 2 I was 39 weeks and with baby 3 I was booked for 39+6 but went into labour the day before so it was treated as an emergency section. I was a bit annoyed about it really.

JoJoManon · 12/11/2013 21:52

Having mine next week at 38+5.
