Swollen fanjo!!!

My fanjo is huge. Also a bit tender. I thought it might be to do with an ingrowing hair (I've had loads since I was pregnant) but it wasn't getting better so I went to GP who first said "Oh, I've never seen anything like that before" (Very reassuring!). She then called obs consultant who said it was probably a vulvar vericose vein and should go post delivery. This is dc3 and I've never had it before. It is just too weird. Especially as the swelling is mostly on one side.

Has anyone else had anything like this? Or am I really a freak, as my GP implied?

Oh that's reassuring. Thank you. And good to know it's likely to go. It certainly is unsightly!

My best friend had this with all 3 of her pregnancies.

She says her bits are fine now!

IComeFromALandDownUnder · 07/11/2013 20:55

I had it too with dc2. The midwife couldn't believe how swollen I was. It was gone within a week post partum.

icravecheese · 07/11/2013 23:22

I had this with DC3....it was literally purple down below, incredibly swollen. I didnt even need to show it to the midwife, she said instantly its vulval varicose veins. I think it actually cleared up prior to birth as baby decided to switch position from head down to transverse, thereby relieving the vulval issues and causing a whole new load of cord prolapse issues. Arghhh! All fine in the end I might add Grin

I had it / have got it!! I'm 40+6 and have had to get used to it, apparently it's just the pressure of baby pushing down and obviously increase of blood flow, I also had thrush I didn't know about that made it worse! Apparently thrush is VERY common so might be worth checking that out, cream sorted me out within a day or two Smile

BettyOff · 08/11/2013 08:14

It's actually very common. Putting pressure on it helps the discomfort so wearing a thick maternity pad during the day can help and sleeping with a pillow pushed right up between your legs. As everyone had said it goes away very quickly after delivery and doesn't cause problems during birth.

FobblyWoof · 08/11/2013 08:32

I've got it too. I had it in my last pregnancy but it's worse this time. It's such a vivid shade of purple and blue it looks like I've been punched in the fanjo!

shirleycat1 · 08/11/2013 16:38

Oh thank you for all the replies. I'm glad it seem pretty common and it's very good to know that it will go down.

Re thrush I basically have it constantly and have had through all my pregnancies. I use a pessary, it goes, it comes back, I use a pessary, it goes, it comes back...

Swollen unsightliness, thrush, in-growing hairs. As you can imagine sex is far from my mind!

Has anyone tried ice packs? Does it help with the swelling/tenderness? That's the advice I have been given but I'm yet to get the frozen peas down my knickers.

Also pads can irritate down below so watch out for that and make sure your wearing 100% cotton pants, that can help I found wearing a nightie and a dressing gown without pants helped as it let the air circulate down stairs WinkGrin x

BettyOff · 08/11/2013 22:52

Ice is good. The advice the MWs I've heard give for ice is to fill a condom and freeze it (well what else are you going to be using it for at the moment Smile) then wrap it in a cloth before applying. The other thing is wetting a mat pad and freezing that then wearing it.....oh the glamour!

NotALemon · 09/11/2013 10:06

I saw my fanjo for the first time in a loooooong time last night (doing some pre-birth tidying Smile!) and I'm pretty sure it's been swapped for someone else's! Glad to hear it goes back to normal afterwards!

Frecklesandspecs · 09/11/2013 19:59

yes! I had a cyst in 2nd pregnancy which went with antibiotics and a vaginal varicous in this last one.
Also a few weeks before I gave birth my labia became very swollen. it was a bit tender but didn't hurt so put it down to another vein.
since I gave birth it has disappeared (3 days ago!)
Funnily enough so have my piles!!

sorry tmi there. Just being honest!! ;-)
