Do I have anymore scans?

I'm pg with baby #1 so a bit clueless as to what the normal procedure is...

I had my 20 week scan yesterday and I was too engrossed on what was going on that I forgot to ask if I have anymore scans? What are the next steps during the next 20 or so weeks...?

nope, no more scans unless you/midwife are concerned about anything that would warrant one :)

Depends on where you are, but most likely you won't, unless they need to check something. You'll just have routine appointments, anti-D jab if you are Rh negative, and whooping cough and flu vaccines if you choose to.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 05/11/2013 14:23

No. Unless there is a medical reason for it.

Just midwife appointments when I had my baby every 4 - 6 weeks but my friend who had a baby more recently said they don't do those as frequently anymore.

think every trust differs. am in northern ireland i had nothing after 20 week scan until 26week midwife checkup and then again at 28weeks then have another check up at 32weeks i have my last scan at 34weeks as its my first pg then after that i think its midwife checkups every 2 weeks. it normally says in your maternity file of all appointments you should have and what happens at them.

What is Rh negative? I'm booked for my flu jab and will book in for my whooping cough too. When I started my appointments with my midwife, she said is have an appt every 4 weeks then every 1-2 weeks later in the third trimester.

No unless you measure extra large during one of your later midwife appointments or have gestational diabetes then you would have a sizing scan to see the size if the baby.
These scans aren't always helpful as they are often incorrect and cause unnecessary concern.

Essexgirlupnorth · 05/11/2013 14:53

Rhesus negative is your blood group but most women are rhesus positive.
If you are rhesus negative they would have told you when you got the results of your booking bloods.

K8eee · 05/11/2013 15:24

Oh I'm b positive! Guess that doesn't apply to me then?

if you were rhesus negative you;d know as it's tested for in your first lot of bloods (or should be!)

Yeah, as others have said you only get extra scans if there are issues. With DS (my first) I had scans every four weeks as I'd have lots of bleeding right up until 24wks so they wanted to keep an eye on his growth, the placenta, etc. with DD I had a scan at 7wks (bleeding) then 12wks and 20wks and that was it. With this one I had a scan at 9wks (bleeding again), one at 12wks, one at 20wks and another at 23wks (baby was badly positioned at the 20wk scan) and I've been booked for a scan at 36wks to check position as DD was a missed breech.

LittlePeaPod · 05/11/2013 21:06

Hi op. No more scans unless you have done sort of complication or go private which is what we have done

getagoldtoof · 05/11/2013 21:11

My hosp do them at 12, 22 and 32 weeks. I then had a couple more throughout pregnancy due to measurig small. As pp mentioned - these can be rather unreliable - they measured baby and said he'd be under 6lb - he was 8lb when he was born three weeks later.

Chelsealady · 05/11/2013 22:35

I have 4 scans in total the 2 that everyone gets and 2 growth scans because im under the age of 20. They give you growth scans also if baby measures big or small or if they find something wrong and they would have booked u in and told you at your 20 week scan so i think thats all for you x

firstimer30s · 06/11/2013 13:03

I'm at 23 weeks and was told that after the 20 week scan, no more! So at the recommendation of a friend I'm going to get one privately at babybond. They are all over the country and apparently quite good. It is £79 or £99 depending on which type of scan you go for.
