Ovarian cysts detected at scan

I am only 6 weeks pregnant but had a scan at Early Pregnancy Unit today as I've been having some little bleeds.
From what they could see baby is in there and healthy and we could see the heartbeat so very happy.
However, they found that my right ovary is enlarged with 2 large cysts measuring 46mm and 33mm. They said not to worry and they will check again at 12 weeks but I can't help but worry. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

DO NOT GOOGLE!!!

Sorry for shouting, just don't do it! You'll only end up more worried. Talk to your midwife if you need to ask questions or go back to the gp.
I'm pretty sure they're common and nothing to worry about. They'd have got you back in for more tests etc sooner if they were worried.
Thanks

It's quite normal. I could see one on my early scans and it wasn't even mentioned (I'd had fertility treatment and was very familiar with how myu ovaries were supposed to look by that point). They are usually corpus luteum cysts (cysts that form where the follicle has released an egg - it looks like you released two this month).

Thank you both
thisisme I'm trying to stay calm and not Google. I will resist
eurochick thank you for the reassurance

I had thee act same thing - early scan at 7 weeks due to bleeding and was told I had two cysts on my ovaries. The sonographer explained they are VERY common in early pregnancy due to hormonal changes and usually disappear by the 12 week scan. She said I might feel some discomfort at times, like little twinges, but it was nothing to worry about. When I went back for my 12 week scan both cysts has disappeared as predicted Smile

It'll be fine. I have an endometrial cyst and was about to start ivf so don't worry! I'm now 27 weeks pregnant with the same cyst and it's not caused problems.

It's almost certainly just from the ovary having released an egg, and it will die back naturally. You probably have them most months after ovulation but you don't realise.

I had the same thing during my third pregnancy. Cyst was present at an early scan and had disappeared by the time I had my 20 week scan.

Thanks all of you, I'm feeling a little more reassured now. The sonographer was saying not to worry but all I heard was "baby is fine....blah blah...two large cysts...blah blah". Will stop worrying so much now and eagerly await the 12 week scan to see what baby (and cysts) are doing. Thanks again

Try not to worry, I've had my ovarian cysts since I was 16, they were discovered after a referral to a gynae after I was having abdominal pain etc they have increased in size and some have burst over the years but I've always had them. They have always been spotted on my baby scans, some docs make a big deal out of them and some don't but they have never caused me any problems during my pregnancies, hope this helps

AlwaysDancing1234 · 04/11/2013 19:28

Thanks TruJay that's reassuring to know.
I have done a little bit of reading (sorry thisisme couldn't help it) and it seems to be common in women who have taken the mini pill I had and most often are harmless and disappear of their own accord.
Thanks to you all for your replies, I really appreciate it

I had this, pretty much exactly. Im just about to get into the bath so on my phone and it'd be a pain to write utter all out on heterosexual but if you pm me, I'll give you a rundown of everything that happened? I've become a but of an unofficial expert on the subject now!

BoohPear · 04/11/2013 19:34

A simple cyst was found on my ovary during my 12 week scan, nearly 8cm. It was still there at my 20 week scan and the same size. I am currently under a consultant for it and deciding whether to have it surgically removed.

It didn't affect my baby in any way shes now 7 months and I'm not getting any pain. They normally do go on there own as hormones can feed them. Mines too big to just disappear unfortunately!

Hope2014 · 04/11/2013 23:36

You've described exactly what they saw at my 6 week scan (even the size of them give or take a couple mm!). I'm at 31 weeks now and they just measured them at the 12 wk scan and checked there was no blood flow to them with a Doppler thingy-majig. They tried to measure again at 20 weeks but they were stuck behind the uterus. I had a consultant appointment at 20 weeks to discuss them and they just said to go in immediately if in any pain and otherwise make an appointment 6 weeks after birth to get them checked out. Hope this helps - congrats and good luck with it all x

Thank you everyone. I think I'll just try and stop worrying now and see what happens at 12 week scan in December. It's not affecting baby in any way and I don't have any pain so hopefully I will have same experience as others in that they will just disappear over time.
