Anyone gone off meat during pregnancy?

17 weeks pregnant and have barely touched or eaten meat for about 8 weeks. The thought makes me nauseous. I can just about manage some fish but chicken, beef etc I have to avoid.

So is this normal? does it matter? what should i substitute?

I have - particularly during the first trimester when I had awful sickness/nausea and lived off some very strange things (some days I managed only toast or plain biscuits or the veg/potatoe part of a meal)

It improved over time but I'm still not keen on meat really and I'm 37 weeks now!

Just try to eat as well as you can - I haven't substituted with anything particular and all is well.

Obviously if you're worried you're missing out on something talk to your midwife/gp.

OP I have been pretty much off red meat, bacon and sausages since 6-8 weeks. I am absolutely fine with chicken, turkey and pork chops.

I haven't changed my diet that much other than avoiding the obvious things like pate, raw eggs, alcohol etc...and and amazingly at 20 weeks I haven't put a pound on Smile

Congratulations by the way! Thanks

I've gone the opposite way. I was vegan when I conceived and am now stuffing myself with cheese and ...(oh god, the shame)...fishfingers.

PacificDogwood · 04/11/2013 14:18

Oh gawd, yes, pork

I still cannot stand the smell now and I am most certainly not up-duffed.

As stated before I've never had much bother with MS in pregnancy, but pork, or rather the smell of pork, became suddenly really offensive.

How are you doing, nevergoogle? HG at all improved??

Get your protein from other sources: egg, beans, soya etc.

Me! I've ended up anaemic though so make sure you get enough iron.

justamouse · 04/11/2013 14:24

Sounds pretty normal to me. I went off all meat and fish around week ten and it's only in the last four weeks (im 35 weeks now) that I've really been able to face roast chicken and bacon and the odd tuna sani.
I substituted with tofu, pulses, lentils, beans and quorn sausages, which for some reason I've loved!
If you are taking a good vitamin you'll still be ok (according to my Dr) and you may feel like eating meat later.

I went off meat, anything but chicken for the first 6 months or so of my pregnancy. Especially the smell of pork (bacon, chops etc) made me very nauseous. Now at 38 weeks I'm eating pretty much everything again Smile

thanks for the reassurance.

the HG has improved significantly. Now not vomitting, and nausea only occasional, but still no appetite and especially no appetite for meat.

Tri 1 and 2 "sausages, yuck"

Now in tri 3, I am heading towards "sausages, I will try it aand see.."

Snobble · 05/11/2013 14:07

Oh my gosh its not just me. I cant even look at red meat & chicken at the moment. The thought of chewing it makes my throat close up.

Might have something to do with the 3 months HG, was awful.

gamerchick · 05/11/2013 14:10

I did with my last pregnancy.. just could not bear the thought of any meat whatsover.

Thankfully I was fine after I had him Grin

minimuffin · 05/11/2013 14:16

I did when pregnant with DS2 (and to a lesser extent with DS3 but not at all with DS1 - strange). Really couldn't stomach red meat until I was past 30 weeks and by that time I'd gone off the idea anyway. The only way I could manage it without retching was mince, so had spag bol and chilli etc when I felt I ought to be keeping my iron levels up. Think I was OK with chicken though. It was the taste and texture - even if I think about it now 5 years on it makes me feel a bit queasy!
