10 weeks dreadful nausea any help welcome

This is my 2nd pregnancy....I'm do apologise ....I'm quite new to site and not sure of all 'lingo' yet. Have dd Who is 3 had awful sickness etc which lasted right the way through (last memory pre birth was hurling out of the car window on way to hospital). I had spells on drip and medication didn't seem to work. So thankful have healthy dd but vowed never again!

However.... at 40 I had shock of my life ....and am currently 10 wks. The same kicked in at 6 wks and I am in bed most days....have been prescribed Cyclizine....having no effect.

It's a 24/7 hangover and I'm terrified it will last duration again ....I feel the 'fog' as I
refer to it instantly disappeared as soon as I had her....but didn't leave before.

If anyone has any advice on different medication or anything really I would be really grateful.... Thanks x

Hi Hun sorry you are going through this. I'm 16 weeks and fingers crossed its calming down. My sickness is more on the morning.

It's been an awful 3 months for me I don't know how I got through it.

All the remedies did nothing for me like ginger etc.

Eating little and often is a good idea that did help. And sip fluid rather than gulping loads down.

Boiled sweet have been my life line for about two month I constantly had a boiled sweet to suck on.

Ice pops also helped me.

I was on the cyclizine and they made me feel like a complete zombie. They didn't help that much but did take the edge off.

With the cyclizine take after you have been sick first thing rather than before your sick .

Rest when ever you can.

Sea bands for wrists which are for travel sickness also didn't get rid of sickness but they do take the edge off. I have a permeant bruise on each wrist as I only take them off for a bath. I'm scared to take them off. ( might not untill have baby lol)

I didn't have them and not sure what they are called but a friend was given sachets of vitiams to pour In a drink which helped her.

Food wise my first 2 months were toast crisps and crackers just eat plain food nothing in massive portions.

When your on the go always have summit to munch on in your bag

Sweetpea thank you...I havnt tried that with the Cyclizine so will definately give it a whirl.... Havn't tried the bands either so will definately invest. I keep sucking the boiled sweets as my mouth feels like I've been licking tin cans constantly ....vile I know.... Again thank you x

Handbags did your Dr ever diagnose hyperemesis gravidarum when you were pregnant with your dd? Or just suggest that it was regular morning sickness? We have a support thread here in pregnancy for anyone who is struggling with nausea and sickness, please come and and say hello! It is so wearing you must be exhausted. There are lots of other drugs that are routinely prescribed in pregnancy, if the cyclizine is not working please do go back to your Dr and explain that it's not having the desired effect. Sometimes they can be a bit about other drugs but but please do persevere.

I'm in a similar position to you in that this pregnancy was unplanned - after hyperemesis with both ds1 and ds2 I was adamant that there would be no more! But here we are, I will be 10 weeks on Monday so similar to you again.

Are you managing to keep anything down? And have you got ketostix to test your wee for nasties?

SicknSpan thank so much I will check out the thread ....it sounds like where I need to be ....I'm just trying to navigate around the site at moment so that's a great help.

In prev preg I had spells of not being able to keep any water down and I believe that is what it went down as. I was given anti sickness injection and IV.

I've been able to keep down rich tea biscuits and bread rolls today. My diet has been awful ....all the veg/salad lean meat I would normally eat I can't even look at let alone smell cooking!

Havnt tried those sticks but will certainly do so. Feel so dreadful moaning on....

Just want to second SicknSpan's advice that you must be insistent about other drugs. I've been lucky that cyclizine has worked for me but if it's not working for you, the NICE guidelines say the doctor must try something else: cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenariorecommendation:4

If you feel too sick to read that link, basically here's the important bit:

If the response to treatment is inadequate, the woman is not dehydrated, and there is no ketonuria

Switch to another anti-emetic such as oral metoclopramide, oral prochlorperazine, or oral ondansetron.
Reassess after 24 hours.

Seek specialist advice if the response to a second anti-emetic is poor.

Continue with the second anti-emetic if the response to treatment is good.

Review the woman once a week thereafter.

The bit I've put in bold is very important IMO because I've read of women being turned away from their doctors because they don't have ketonuria. This just goes to show that you can be technically hydrated and still very ill indeed!

Seek specialist advice from an obstetrician or gynaecologist if:

Response to anti-emetics is inadequate.

The woman is dehydrated or has ketonuria despite drug treatment.

And good luck - it's really unspeakably miserable. There was another thread on here in which a poster who had gone through both chemo and hyperemesis described the latter as worse.

So sorry to hear you are feeling this awful. It really is the most miserable feeling. Cyclizine did not work for me and I needed stronger meds. A different combination of medication may work for you, it seems different for everyone. Accupressure bands did not work at all either. If anti-emetics do not work, the band are also unlikely to.

Just wanted to say good luck at the doctor's today - if you are the kind of person (like me!) who is terrible at asking for stuff, give yourself a mental pep talk before you go in and do NOT let them fob you off! x

Marzipanned thank you. I was prescribed an alternative and really hoping they take the edge off it. Dr was fab and quite reassuring saying his wife had taken them during her pregnancy so I felt a little better.
