What remedies can we take for common ailments?

I'm sick of everything saying 'pregnant women should consult their doctor before using this product' I would be permanently at the doctors! Are they all just covering themselves?
I had a coldsore last week - not supposed to use zovirax. I thought I had cystitis starting a few weeks ago - can't use normal remedies. (incidentally, someone once told me that drinking a tsp of bicabonate of soda dissolved in water works - is this true and can I take it when pg?). Last time I was pg, I had a stinking cold at about 38 wks. I phoned NHS Direct to see if there was anything I could take, and the answer was no! I can feel indigestion starting again now - but I believe I can take gaviscon for that! What are we to do?

are you LTH? - I've been away and am confused!

bundle · 06/07/2006 14:07

my friend carried industrial sized containers of gaviscon around with her when she was pg

LadyT · 06/07/2006 14:14

No, I'm not LTH, but I saw that name after I picked mine (a nickname I already had). I could change it if it will cause confusion!!

Sympatyhising with you as 29 weeks and I have thrush. Have asked mw, nurse and nhs direct oh and my pharmacist and all said see GP!!!! GRRRR! Why??? I know it's thrush, nhs direct asked all these random q's about weird rashes, swellings etc...

I have been to another pharmacy and it is OK to use cream only and so have some canesten. Hooray! Nothing worse than sore bits!

It drives me mad that I have to waste GP time and my time to ask a trivial q. No wonder you can never geta GP app when you want one with so much time wasting!

Oh and yes, gaviscon is ok, but the liquid stuff not the tabs.

Oops, I used the tablets last time - easier to carry round in the handbag! Never mind, it had no ill effects on ds - he's quite normal!

I was told for thrush to use yoghurt down there (not eat it just rub it in to your bits)and leave overnight

peppermint tea for indigestion

Gaviscon for def - I drank bottles of the stuff.
Paracetomol only for colds (a teeny weeny hot toddy might be OK)
Cranberry juice & canestan cream for thrush
BIG cuddles from DH/DP also helps for everything else 9worked for me)

I have a giant bottle of gaviscon advance from the midwife, the tablets say on the packet that they are fine when pg, luckily havent needed any thing else but am dreading getting ill!!!!

olivo · 06/07/2006 14:36

uh oh! anyone know why not the gaviscon tablets? thats what i have been taking - i got them in boots, they didnt say anything about it even though I told them I was pg.

emzickle · 06/07/2006 15:03

i discovered a exzema like rash on my thigh - had a doctors appointment any way, due to change of practice, he pescribed a cream, which I had to get from Boots pharmasist - the pharmasist said to NEVER use this particular steriod cream when pregnant and refused to give it to me - so i went back, saw a different doctor, who gave me some vasaline to put on it.
Totaly confuzzled an already burnt out brain.

For thrush - Natural yoghart on a clean tampon for an hour or so - supposed to return you back to your natural pH.

Gaviscon liquid and tablets are supposed to be safe, the ones I have (and live on) actually state on the packet that are suitable for PG women.

Not sure why not the tabs but my mw said no to them when I had DD nrly 2 yrs ago... Maybe it has altered now.

I used to drink gaviscon too with DD, had a huge bottle in each bag I used and used to 'swig' it like an alchie!

Any how... canesten working- hooray!!! Boots actually were more helpful than anyone I have seen.
