Short woman seeks drop side cotbed

I am five foot tall on a good day and looking to buy a drop side cotbed but I am perplexed as to the best cotbed to purchase and would really appreciate some advice. If you are verticallly challenged which cotbed did you buy and do you use the drop side much? Many thanks.

Hi Flea,

I'm vertically challenged and have a drop side cotbed from Tutti Bambini for our DS. I use the drop side all the time. Especially as I am pg with DC2. As they get bigger I find it really useful.

I'm 4ft 11 and my mamas and papas drop side cot has been fine as you could alter the bed level too.

I am five foot and worried about this but in the end we didn't go for a drop side a d it's fine. By the time we wanted the cot on the lowest setting ds was standing up. Occasionally I have to lift him into his cot whilst asleep but actually I don't find it that low.

Five foot nothing here, and I can't really remember ever bothering with the cotside mechanism.

I am of the "plonk and run" brigade tho.

I was put off drop-sides when I read they have been banned in the USA on safety grounds. There was a terribly sad case in this country a few years ago.

Remember being surprised that so few cot beds had drop sides. In the end we bought this one: www.babystyle.co.uk/nCotBeds-Hollie.html
We did use the drop side a lot as I think by the time DD went into it we had the mattress at the lowest level as she could pull herself up.

Yeah they're banned here. Been a few awful cases. :(

I must admit that the actual safety of drop side cotbeds does worry me.

However, (and I hope I am allowed to just copy and paste these paragraphs), according to a Which website article on how to buy the best cot bed:

"New rules to ban drop-side cots in the United States were introduced from June 2011, following the deaths of at least 32 babies because of defective drop-side cots since 2000, and recalls on 11 million cots since 2007.

"The European Cot Standard was also amended in February 2013, with the key change being that drop sides on cot beds are required to lock in the lower position after a child trapped themselves underneath.

"British cots come under British safety standards (BS EN 716: 2005), which are different from standards in the US. Our nursery furniture safety experts believe that it would not be possible for the kind of accidents that occurred in the US to happen with a cot bed that complies with the British safety standards."

The case I referred to was in the UK, although in 2010 - hopefully the new European regulations have addressed the safety issue that allowed it to happen.
