winge about acid reflux

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to have a little winge about acid reflux, why do movies make pregnancy soo glamorous and easy. I am extremely happy to be pregnant, especially after the hell my hubby and me were through TTC, but nothing prepared me for the pregnancy itself. I had horrid morning sickness (being sick 10-14 times a day) sometimes only being able to live off bread... It continuted up till 20 weeks and since 13 weeks I have horrid heartburn, been on rantitidine with 0 effect , now omeprazole initially one tablet a day now twice a day. Also not great help. I can't eat anything outside , have to bring my own lunch. I can't really socialise with people as I can only go for tea... So end up meeting friends for tea/coffee and having to decline invitations for dinners/lunches just because I can't eat. This is just so depressing , my hubby and me can't even go anywhere on babymoon, cause can't rely on the food provided in the hotel and never knowing if I will be sick or not... The food choices are quite limited nothing spicy, no tomatoes, citrus fruits, sweets, chocolates, etc... I will do anything for my baby, but it just has been hard. I am only 24 weeks and getting to the stage where I can't eat, can't breath and can't walk ( back problems) and still have somehow to manage at work... Was anyone else in the same situation? Winge over :-)

hi I have acid reflux too, it's horrid when it starts. have u tried hot water, I know it sounds stubid but it really does help. x

Awe I'm sorry your finding it tough, understandably too.
I had server acid reflux in my first pregancy, I have a stomach ulcer so I'm Actually used to acid reflux and all the meds but nothing prepared me for how bad it could be during pregancy.
I had Hypermsiser too I'm pretty certain that server ms is what kicks off the acid reflux due to your stomach being so unsettled.

TBH I've found cutting out foods makes so little difference it's not worth forgoing them.
I found a good gluge of Gavison helped before bed as well as whatever else your prescribed.

Have you tried milk or yogurt to help? I used to drink milk or eat yogurt along with digestive biscuits this really seemed to help I named it tummy glue.

A little bit of good news is than in any future pregancies you may not experience the same level of acid reflux. Mine has been fairly under control so far, only 12 weeks but a lot less ms.

LittleBairn thank you for the tip about biscuits and yoghurt , I did try milk, makes me sick ... Hazelnut and almond milk seems to work though ... On food discovery journey normal yoghurt does not go through, but greek yoghurt works so far, need to try it with biscuits . As for food for me cutting out was decided by my body, tried a hamburger once from GBK it came out within 20 minutes or so, so since than I don't experiment really ....stick to safe territory. Did you have to be on omeprazole as well?
sarahshaw10 thank you, I tried hot water with honey and ginger, seems to work sometimes

I feel your pain. Its really nasty isn't it.

I tried everything and nothing really helped, not for longer than an hour at the longest.

My dp bought me some bisodel which are tiny mint flavour chalky tablets. They work sooooo well for me, and I don't mind the taste of them either! I get through them fairly quickly but it really does keep it at bay.

Every tablet etc works differently so they may not work for you but its worth a try!

Good luck.

Can you take the full combination i,e. Omeprazole, ranitidine and gaviscon (is it the aniseed that makes you retch? Can you try the mint) or Rennies? Heartburn is miserable and can do damage.... Maybe worth asking for a gastro referral.

LittleBairn · 23/10/2013 20:21

happychick I'm actually lactose intolerant now so can't do the milk but Koko (coconut) milk works just as well as other non milks. Tastes so much better too. I would make hot chocolate with it just for a different flavour when I felt like a change.

Yes to omeprazole. It does nothing for me tbh but then I've been prescribed it too when trying to take meds that's are bad for stomach ulcers.

A word of warning because your stomach is so unsettled it can be difficult for the body to absorb all the nutrient you need so beware about becoming deficient. Afterwards I was folate anemic which my Dr believed it was down the reflux, I was fie after taking an extra large dose of Folic acid for 3 months.

I used to despise Gavison spent years avoiding it but it really has been the most effusive at giving me a little relief.

Thank you all for all your messages , glad to know I am not the only one ... I am now being rferred to gastroenterologist ...LittleBairn tip on buscuits and yoghurt is a good one, it does help. It just so annoying you want to avoid drugs in pregnancy and when you have no choice but take them....Boo! Thank you all again !
