Pregnant and just been offered an interview for a new job. What would you do?

DH and I have been trying to conceive for 10 months since a miscarriage late last year. I decided in the interim period I should stop putting off applying for the next level of promotion as I didn't know how long it would take to conceive (I am a teacher).

I applied for a job I really like the sound of, and had heard nothing within a month of the closing date, so assumed I'd been unsuccessful. Found out I was pregnant a week and a half ago (7 weeks on Thursday) and found out yesterday I have an interview for the job.

I asked my head teacher's advice, and he said he thinks I should go for it anyway and see how I get on without revealing my up-the-duff status; my first instinct was to withdraw.

Any wise words?

There's nothing you can do about that. Apply and interview for the experience, if nothing else. It's not always a bad sign if there's an internal candidate - it's not a guarantee.

Engineering It really depends on the employer, some would be nice like yours, and others, well... Let's say I have seen both types and unfortunately it is not something you can know before starting or taking up a new role, whether you are pregnant or just planning to be.

It is a big, bad, male dominated world out there and if women don't look after their own interests no one else will. I don't believe that you can put your life on hold, just because of a temporary period of pregnancy and maternity. Nor should you be expected to. I do believe however, in being honest whilst not tripping yourself up i.e. In a similar situation I will make my "condition" known at the point of accepting an offer.
