I'm 20 weeks pg and I stupidly used some Manuka oil on a skin rash I had on my neck today and subsequently found out that its not recommended for use during pregnancy....so now I'm panicking that I've done something stupid that will harm my baby. Does anyone know anything about this? It's hard to find on line what the side effect is although I've discovered that its not recommended....?

Hi, really don't know much but think it has to do with the effect it has on muscles if used neat and used a lot. I know we worry about every little thing we do, but I am sure a small amount on your face won't have done any harm. Maybe call your MW in the morning for reassurance?
One other thing is just to be careful of what you put on your skin - lots of people have allergies to things when they are pg that they were not allergic to before.

Thank you foodylicious, it's silly how much little things can become a big worry, especially late at night! Thanks for the reassurance. I'll speak to my MW too and get her thoughts. I've done a bit of google searching but its hard to find any evidence of what the issues and potential adverse affects are. Your advice is really appreciated!

Nothing like this is ever going to have been tested on pregnant women, so they're not going to be able to say its safe. Menthol rubs are 'not suitable' yet it's only mint - we eat mint, so suru can't harm your skin?! I'd just use a bit of the common sense approach - it's gone on your skin so hardly any will absorb into your system, and is there anything dangerous in the oil ... probably not.

Hope that doesn't come across as if I'm trying to be funny - I'm really not. I've had this discussion with my back specialist over the use of topical creams and gels, and using them despite their warnings.
