Maternity winter coats- have you bought one?

I have bought a cheap maternity parka from H&M for dog walking and was trying to be cheap get away with not buying a 'proper' maternity winter coat and instead wearing my normal coats undone but with big scarves or wearing capes. I need to look semi smart for work and the parka is definitely a dog walking coat rather than day to day wear.

This week has been so cold and wet and miserable that I'm starting to reconsider, the baby isn't due until early January and if I'm feeling the cold this much now then by December I will be really suffering.

I've looked on all the usual websites- Isabella Oliver, Seraphine, New Look, ASOS, JoJo Maman Bebe, Mothercare etc and I am really uninspired by the coats out there. So have you bought a winter coat or are you improvising?

I have the New Look snood coat too. I'm really happy with it but slightly irritated by the lack of pockets.
I'm due in February so will have a lot of winter to get through so it made sense to buy a cheap maternity coat. I think it'll be good for covering up the extra weight after the birth too until Spring arrives.

Another vote for the New Look snood coat here! It is comfy and warm, but not too hot. I chose it because of the price, that it suits work and casual, and it has 2 rows of press studs so can be used with a sling after dc2 arrives in mid jan.

Lack of pockets? Apart from parka styles don't most women's coats only have 2 pockets? I have always been jealous of all the pockets dh has

Thingymajigs · 19/10/2013 12:50

I don't have any pockets on my snood. Hadn't occured to me that it may be faulty. Does yours have two?

I'm also using it with a sling afterwards. Smile

Ginformation · 19/10/2013 12:56

Ah, have you unpicked the stitching at the entrance to the pockets? Not sure why coat/jacket pockets come stitched up, is it to stop things being stuffed in them in shops?

AnotherStitchInTime · 19/10/2013 12:57

I bought one from SuriAjuni for my pregnancy with dd2 who was born in Feb 2012. It was worth it because I used it after she was born to wear over my wrap sling to keep her warm. I will be making use of it again this winter for dc3 as I am due in Jan.

Well, I feel stupid. Grin I thought the seam was a little weak. Glad I spotted this thread now. Thanks!

I got a gorgeous as new duffle coat from e-bay for £15 well worth looking for a bargain on there.

MrsPatMustard · 19/10/2013 16:51

I'm trying to go for a cheap option. I've borrowed a couple of thick wool wraps from friends and I'm going to our local NCT nearly new sale next week - am hoping I'll get lucky and find something there. If not, then will look on ebay...

MrsVDB · 19/10/2013 20:46

Oops I hadn't unpicked my stitching either!

Meringue33 · 19/10/2013 20:51

I had the Seraphine one, it was £75 I think but was at least 70% wool so was actually warm and was well worth it. Last winter was so long and cold, and I didn't lose the baby weight quickly, so wore it for six months! I also wore it around LO in the sling when he was little.

Ginformation · 19/10/2013 21:17

Grin thingy glad your hands have somewhere to keep warm now, yours too *mrsvdb

Seems such a pontiffs exercise to make pockets, then stitch them up though.

Ginformation · 19/10/2013 21:19

Grin POINTLESS have no idea if pontiffs would make pockets, but I assume not. Bastard auto correct.

HorryIsUpduffed · 20/10/2013 15:37

Pockets are tacked up in shops so they don't gape when they're on display.

I have managed in my pre-pgy waterproof from Lands End, but I also have a size-too-big smart M&S coat from first pgy which was when the style was for big balloon-ish coats. No hood though Hmm

TheElephantWoman · 20/10/2013 15:47

I couldn't find one that was relatively cheap, had a hood and was waterproof so I ended up buying a cheapo Primark parka in a bigger size.

It's not very smart so should probably have something a bit nicer for work, but I've decided I don't care! I've only got a few weeks left at work, and if anyone decides to have a go at me about my outerwear... well, hell mend them!

bail16 · 20/10/2013 15:53

I got a lovely one last year from red herring in debenhams

Undertheboredwalk · 20/10/2013 19:09

I've also bought & Coats this one and very happy with it too. It fits really well, very comfy and lovely and snuggly in the cold. And not expensive either Grin

Undertheboredwalk · 20/10/2013 19:09

Have no clue why my link went so strange. Never mind!
