Needs to be towards the end - I think before 36/37 weeks the likelihood of a false negative is too high.
It's over in a blink of the eye - certainly more bearable than a smear test.
In some places you might have to push for it to be done - I'm not sure how far it's available on the NHS.

Hi, I am planning to do the test after reading about it on mn. You can order it privately from The Doctors Laboratory - email [email protected] to request it. They've sent me the kit and the leaflet that comes with it says to test between 35-37 weeks. Discuss it with your midwife but if you want you can do the swabs (two) yourself, sounds easy enough. You then send them to the lab with cheque for £32 and get the results sent to your midwife. I know that at least in my area the NHS don't do the test routinely.

You need www.gbss.org.uk The people who provide the most reliable test, privately, are The Doctors Laboratory. Group B Strep is not routinely tested for on the nhs

steff - I was told to go at 34 weeks (privately, i'm not in uk, and they dont test for it here routinely)- am due end of august. Might have to check out the 'false negative' thing though - seems a waste of money otherwise.

I'm in the channel islands - i hope my gp will do it but i'm sure i'll have to pay for it as i know they dont offer it.

just did a search - this one comes up with 36 weeks as being a reasonable time to test accurately
