Cervical Length Scan

Has anyone had one of these? What did you see and did you get a look at baby too?

Im having one tomorrow at 14+6 due to an extensive lletz treatment for abnormal cells last year. The lady doing the scan (not sure if its consultant, doctor or sonographer) said it was purely precautionary and based on the tissue taken last year she wasnt expecting to find me with a short cervix needing further treatment.

Im trying to be positive and use it as hopefully another chance to have a look at the baby (if im going to have to bear the dildocam there had better be some reward!!). Is there any chance of seeing the sex at this point? Am assuming if its a boy there might be a little something to see now!

Any experiences welcome :)

I had one at 13 weeks and there was no chance of telling the sex but they did do it 3d so I got a much higher definition 3d scan which was nice. It was an internal scan though so not much fun.

I had one at 16 weeks and the sonographer did tell me the sex. But they don't have to - I think it was because he was a nice chap and I was friendly and cheerful. You're not going to convince a miserable jobsworth but you might get lucky with anyone else if you go in with a smile! Hmm, that sounds really inappropriate given the nature of a cervical length check!

Anyway, some aren't able to tell the sex (not trained), some can't because of the position of the baby. At 15 weeks it's going to be borderline, but you never know..

Coincidentally I have a cervical length check tomorrow as well! Different pregnancy than the one mentioned, and I'll be 16+6. I have checks as I have true incompetent cervix and these days a permanent transabdominal stitch in place - I think they just want to check it is doing its job. I already know the sex as I had the Harmony blood test this time around at 10 weeks, and I know this PCT (as opposed to my last one) does not reveal the sex at any scan, so there's no point me asking.

I'm hoping to get some photos of the baby too but it is so dependent on the mood of the sonographer. Most are lovely, or at least perfectly pleasant - but you get the odd crap one.

Hopefully everything will be fine for you tomorrow!

I had this as part of my 22 week scan - but this was Kings

Oh im glad you responded Crispy, I feel familiar with your last pregnancy having been searching like mad on here for info!

The lady I spoke to on the phone who is doing the scan was lovely, very straight and matter of fact (which works for me) and sympathetic at the same time.

Just to give a bit more background, my lletz took 18mm of tissue and at my hospital they only see people if they have taken more than 15mm so she said she wasnt expecting to find anything significant. They didnt mention anything at my lletz about making sure they were aware of it when I decided to have a baby either so im guessing they didnt think it was that significant either.

Im not too worried at this point (well I am, but not going insane, which is my usual default!) im a practical person so I just want to have this scan then think about the consequences. The doctor put it beautifully for me 'I dont think we are going to find anything, but if we do we will deal with it, dont worry' Thats good enough for me as I believe the battle with this sort of thing is getting monitored in the first place, so im feeling ok about things

I had one as part of my 20 week scan due to previous prematurity. It was dildo cam and the baby wasn't really very clear from that angle. They did the rest of the scan abdominally (including ascertaining the sex for me).

Mine found a perfectly normal cervix length but I still went into labour at 27 weeks! It all stopped though and I had him at term eventually.

greentshirt · 16/10/2013 10:33

Measurement was 3.2 so within the normal range (and what they would have expected to see based on average cervix length minus tissue taken). Rescan at 21 weeks to check still ok.

Very relieved!

That's great news! 32mm is a decent length especially given your history. I am also glad they are rescanning you too Smile

Did she check for the sex at all, out of interest?

greentshirt · 16/10/2013 12:18

Yes she gave it a go and said she thought she could see a penis, but wasnt sure. We have been feeling its a boy all along though so I bet she is right! Im having a sexing scan next week so will get confirmation then!

She was actually the nicest HCP I have dealt with since being pregnant, really nice, very straight and practical. She said 'oh I always do a little ultrasound at these too, you have to have some compensation for having an internal!' Everyone else has been a right misery so it was very refreshing!

That's always lovely when you get a really nice one! My sonographer (NHS) today was not all that great (the trainee with her was absolutely fine though!) so it's a good thing I wasn't hoping to get a peek at the sex. as I would probably have been told off Wink. I had an abdominal to check growth before they did the internal which I wasn't expecting and which I was pleased to have. Always good to know baby is growing!!

For what it's worth my measurement was fine too - my stitch is still working Grin Can relax a bit now!
