Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

What a fucking day. SPD is awful. Nausea is bad. DS has remembered his tantrum-vomiting trick. And my grandad has just died.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 22/11/2013 21:11

ah MoG, I'm so sorry. Thanks

MurderOfGelth · 22/11/2013 21:15

Thank you, it's for the best, but still..

jenpatnim · 22/11/2013 22:58

MOG, I am so sorry to hear your news. Hugs and kind thoughts to you and your family.

Living, you have a lot going on over there. I have clinical depression and have continued with antidepressants (although I have been reducing the dose throughout the pregnancy) and counselling (which is coming to an end on Monday... eeep). I know it is not the same, but it sucks trying to manage another illness with HG and pregnancy. I also have had the bizarrely copious discharge. I have been wearing period pads for the duration of the pregnancy pretty much, as my knickers were getting ruined without. It is not pleasant or pretty, and much stronger smelling than before.

Sally, I am sure you will be delighted to see DH home, and I hope that you manage that drive to the airport safely.

Lucinda, I must admit I had a chuckle at your blue tinged nether regions!

I have 4 more weeks of work. Still no replacement, like, but sure, not my problem, right? Aargh I am going to have to let go so I just have to deal with it and not worry. Must. Not. Worry. lol

I am looking forward to Christmas, though. I have been doing bits of shopping online and when I have been out, and I am starting to get excited about giving out presents and whatnot. I go to Christmas day at my parents' house (family stress notwithstanding, we are very good at playing happy families when we want to) and my brother will be there too. Should be nice, this will be the last baby-free Christmas and then next year will be all toys and Santa!

Only1scoop · 22/11/2013 23:01

Mog so sorry to hear your sad news

livingzuid · 22/11/2013 23:51

Thanks Sally and jen :) I never thought I would be that person whose life has a drug regime but it could be much worse. There seem to be several of us coping with other illnesses on top of this sickness thing. I still forget my lunchtime dose thanks to a new phone and I haven't figured out the alarm to Grin but am used to it now.

Jen, I'm sorry you are having to go through depression with this. Feeling so rubbish must have made it even worse. It's easy to feel so alone sometimes.

But am reassured now about the discharge thing - isn't there so much about being preggo that no one ever tells you and you are left thinking eh?! I have had to Google so much just to get info! This thread has been a lifeline :)

mog I'm really sorry to hear your news. Hope you are getting on OK in the circumstances.

chaffinch is there any other liquid you can tolerate? For about 3 days the only liquid I had was via my frozen capri-sun!

Insomnia is back for me. Off to read a book. DH is happily snoring next to me. Nothing like rubbing it in - it was his snoring that woke me!

livingzuid · 22/11/2013 23:53

Oh and jen nope, not your problem! Just look forward to your maternity leave!

eggybrokenoff · 23/11/2013 07:45

hey all

mog so sorry to hear your news.

huge admiration for all coping with other illnesses on top of hg - i really shouldnt be moaning!!

re work i had so much time off with ds 1 - you cant help itbyou are ill. if you had another long term illness you wouldnt feel bad. take the time you need and only worry about yourself.

i have had insomnia too - i wondered if it was tablets. just awake for hours during the night after falling asleep fine.

and yep i also have had discharge thing and def did with ds2 too x

Meerka · 23/11/2013 10:52

moG im so sorry to hear it. thinking of you.

livingzuid, HG on top of all that just isnt fair. Hope you are managing ok

LucindaE · 23/11/2013 12:19

Not sure I;ll ever be doing that Naughty Naughty Tut Tut Stuff again ... i might get preg again!!!

eggybrokenoff · 23/11/2013 17:50

i have worked myself into a state this evening worrying - nausea not kicked in fully yet today. v worried something is wrong with the baby. dh thinks im being a numpty

Meerka · 23/11/2013 19:13

eggy, hormones rise and fall depending on the days with some pregnancies. Several of us on this thread have found this and found we get all worried if there is a day or three without nausea or with low nausea!

The very high chance is that all is ok. How far along are you? When is your next scan?

eggybrokenoff · 23/11/2013 20:11

i am 14 weeks - next scan beginning jan. im sure it is fine im just a worrier!

Tallyra · 23/11/2013 21:24

eggy, mine went at 14w and I'm now 19 and all fine. don't worry xxxx

livingzuid · 24/11/2013 01:59

Just popping in for a whinge. Had a terrible migrane earlier and was lying down around 7 and dosing. I didn't want to take Paracetamol as so many other drugs flying round my bloodstream. Fast forward to 1.30 am and I can't keep any liquids down and head felt like it was about to fall off so took 2. Just been sick again :( and wide awake! My head is not so sore any more though which is a bonus.

waves will reply properly to everyone after sleep!!

livingzuid · 24/11/2013 02:00

eggy am sure all is fine. Enjoy being nausea free!

livingzuid · 24/11/2013 09:59

OK so got another 3 hours sleep. Even with tablet for sickness I was sick 4 times. Two quick questions - does paracetamol make you vomit or does no food also make you vomit? I couldn't keep any fluid down overnight. If that happens should I have some toast? The thought of eating was urgh

Also are migranes common? I only felt a bit headachey after starting to take the sickness tablets and yesterday it turned into full blown migrane. Have a tiny sore head this morning but the paracetamol did its thing thank god. I think I will have to call the gp and mention it tomorrow.

LucindaE · 24/11/2013 10:37

livingzuid You poor thing! I suffered dreadfully from migraines in the early weeks, and confused dehydration headaches from vomiting with them too. I think a fair number of women who are prone to them get them more in early pregnancy - also, I've vaguely heard that there is a connection between them and Ondansetron, but I don't think, being in Holland, that you are on Ondansetron? The sickness that goes with them is truly hellish - poor you. Glad you are a bit better this morning, a good idea to find out if there is a connection between them and the drug you are on. The annoying thing is, you mustn't take Feverfew in pregnancy, which I always found a good migraine preventative but it can inscrease mc risk.
Meerka Lol Grin!
Eggy I am sure it is just one of those good days! It's so difficult; one prays for the suffering to stop, then worries about a good day.
Tallyra Hugs for your nice support - but will I need extended arms now?
Hope Jen SicknSpanOnly1ScoopSuperlambanana Bezzabelle and Everyone is coping.

Meerka · 24/11/2013 10:38

hiya zuid sounds like things are pretty darn unpleasant :(

I dont know about migranes, though you can get bad headaches from not enough water. But with HG pills can make you be sick, but not paracetamol in particular afaik. The advice is that if you can eat at all, eat little and often. Many of us find that we are sick if we get too empty a tummy. When you feel that you can eat, do!

livingzuid · 24/11/2013 11:44

Lol DH has just said no sex ever again he never wants to go through this. Naughty stuff is so far off my agenda right now anyway it's hard to get in the mood when the preferred companion is a toilet bowl. It's tough on the menfolk too isn't it I know he hates seeing me like. This.

Lucinda it's so bad isn't it. I am dreading how to get through my last month at work. My contract can't be renewed due to strange Dutch employment law and there is a good role they want me to apply for, but how can I work when like this and put on a good showing these last few weeks. I'm really looking forward to signing on in January assuming all is well at scan on Friday! The headaches only started after going on sickness tablets strangely so I will have to ask. I did wonder whether I had drunk enough yesterday and if it was too little too late.

Meerka DH has been despatched for a McDonald's and huge diet coke - funnily enough diet coke from the tap helps settle things and I had success with mcds before Grin I will do as you say and eat when I can. So far toast and cornflakes has stayed put. Thank you for the Pacetamol info that's reassuring.

And Dr said I could take one sickness tablet at night and another in the morning if needed. Being Dutch he was at pains to tell me to not if possible Grin but I think I shall try that at least during the week so space them every 12 hours. Sound sensible?

Not on the ondastranon (sorry sp) it's an antihistamine and b6 one. Meerka said it's a common one to give out here, starts with an E I would go get the box but scared to move in case I want to be sick again!

goths hope you are doing better?

Meerka · 24/11/2013 13:00

Emesafene =) its the antihistamine and B6 that actually, all doctors seem to prescribe first of all in all countries, if you do a bit of digging as to what is prescribed where. In fact I took Emesafene three times a day under doctor's orders but I'm not suggesting you do that without a doctor's say so, specially on your other meds.

Its very unlikely you'll get ondansetron, that's almost the last time of defense and there's several drugs they prefer to try first. Mind you getting any drugs at all seems to be rare here :s god, the dutch system is so variable. Outstanding in some treatments and truly terrible - lethal, when you consider that some people have to go for abortions - in some cases.

livingzuid · 24/11/2013 13:43

meerka it's so true. Tbh I have to be grateful I have bipolar as I access top specialists rather than front line care which can be so so variable as we found to our cost. Bipolar shoots me up to the top of the tree of what care I get so we fully intend to exploit that Grin I think I mentioned the mental health care as being outstandingly good compared to home. But for this pregnancy stuff I've missed the NHS. I have a great gp thankfully. I think if you're in Rotterdam or Amsterdam or Leiden then you've got access to the big teaching hospitals. Wouldn't touch the Hague hospitals with a barge pole. So it's down to location as well. Lady at work had ovarian cancer and got a drug here she couldn't get back in the UK as it was too expensive. She's now in remission. But huge cock up in theatre and also one chemo session resulted in wrong drug being given. Could happen anywhere to be fair but it shows medical units just do not communicate here. She nearly died from their mistake after they put an expensive drug in to cure her!

They'd rather abort than give a pregnant mum good hg care????

Anyway, on a happier note, mcds worked. As did diet coke. Feeling a bit more human might actually move from sofa :) I can take two tablets and think I'll need to to get through work and commute. Looking forward to my little day trip to London and I even have some time for shopping before coming home :) maternity bra here i come!

Meerka · 24/11/2013 13:55

Yes, quite a few doctors are so adamant against drugs that they will allow you to go through so much that you'll ended up aborting out of desperation, even if you want the baby a lot. I do think some doctors are as ignorant in the UK too and in the US if you read the helpher site, there are some truly saddening stats about HG and abortion, but it's a much more prevalent anti-drug ethos here. coldly angry

On a much nicer note Im glad to hear that your work colleague did pull through and is in remission

Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better and good enough to go to London for the day, good stuff! :)
