Hi there,

am overdue by 3 days and would like some tips on how to encourage babachop along, or how to avoid boredom! Did anyone else feel a bit 'emotional' in the last few days before birth? Any breathing tips for when giving birth as well? Ones that actually have worked for you?

Thanks Smile

It's crap. I went 10 days overdue! Tried all the old wives tale tricks and unsurprisingly nothing worked. Go to the cinema - that's my top tip! DS is almost 9 months old now and I've yet to manage to go and see a film!

10 days is reassuring! Were you induced/have a membrane sweep? How long did it take for your son to come along after? Sorry -lots of Q's. This is my first...

I had three sweeps! None worked. In the end went into labour naturally and had him 12 hours later via EMCS. The hospital and midwives were all amazing. My idea of a natural birth didn't quite pan out ;)

I agree with Octanegirl that nothing works. I've been overdue with 2 of my DC and am now 37weeks and expecting to go 'overdue' again. Normal term is between 37 and 42 weeks so sleep, read, go to the cinema and try not to just sit around willing your baby to come. Good luck x

I went over by 16 days with DS and I had tried everything! Good luck, hope things get going soon for you. Enjoy the peace while it lasts.

Breathe out as much as you breathe in! It sounds obvious but every time I forgot. If you use gas don't just try and gulp loads in but try to let long breaths out into the mask or mouthpiece, it really helped me.
Good luck.

Long deep breaths in and out through the contraction, block everything else out and just concentrate on that long breath in through the nose out through the mouth. I had to have my DM tell me to breathe, literally in a calming voice, in and out. Helped me feel as if I had control, even if it was only over that one thing. Likewise, pressing the button on my tens machine, because of the control.
In terms of keeping yourself occupied, try to keep yourself moving, do something other than just wait for labour to start. The day before I went to the cinema, did my weekly shop, went for a swim. I don't believe any of it brought on labour, but it made the time pass a lot quicker. I was feeling uncharacteristically well the day before, after being exhausted for weeks before, possibly something to do with it being so close.

Thanks very much for all of the advice, it's good to be reminded to breathe out as well. I was told to practice whilst doing a poo! Thanks again all -really reassuring for this first time mum! Thanks
