Not sure if this is the best place to post this but need a bit of advice...

So I'm currently near the end of a 1 year temp contract. It ends at the end of Nov and I am 14 weeks pregnant at the min. I haven't told work that I'm pregnant and that's what I'm worried about! My manager had said my contract May be extended but I will have to wait and see...

So do I tell work now at the risk it may influence them in extending my contract. Or do I wait untill they offer me one (if they do). Which may not be until the end of Nov by which time I will be 20 weeks! ConfusedConfusedConfused

Legally you won't need to tell work until 24 weeks, however you don't get time off for appointments until you do, or other legal protections - if it was me, I would wait as there is nothing would be no way to know if any decision they take is related to pregnancy or not - however this is only my opinion. Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

Yeah I want to wait. Just don't want work to hate me.
Oh thanks for the new contract-btw I'm pregnant Hmm

I was in a sort of similar situation with my first child. I was on a temporary contract that they were in the process of considering to extend when I found out I was pregnant. I needed time off for medical appointments straight away as I have a medical condition, but I kept my mouth shut about the pregnancy and just said it was due to the medical condition. Once they'd actually given me the permanent contract I waited about a week and then came clean - it was quite early but as I needed the time off to go to hospital I thought it better to be upfront. I was convinced they'd hate me, but everyone was happy for me and I was never made to feel bad about it. Most (but not all) employers in my opinion accept that women will go off and have babies now and then and are generally quite accepting of it. There's always some that can make life difficult though. Hope your employer is the former.

my advice is to hold out until you have the contract in black and white if you can to play it safe.

It's not worth risking telling them, I too was on a temp contract leading to a permanent contract, and because my manager was also pregnant I confided in her. Needless to say she went on to relay the information to her senior bosses who decided to get rid of me at the end of my contract.
If you can hold off, do it, at least you know that if your contract is

discontinued, it won't be because you're pregnant.

It's decided then...keep my mouth closed untill they let me know for certain Wink thanks guys!

Just a quick update! So I got offered a permanent position last week and signed the contract todayGrin woooo! Question now is...when do I tell work in pregnant? I'm 17 weeks and have begun to gain weight and have a 'bulge'. Trying to cover it with a scarf etc
Should I wait a week or 2? But what if I 'pop' during that time? Argh.

I wouldn't say out untill u get your new contract. I know they can't discriminate because of your pregnancy but let's face it companies do. It's a bummer women have to do this at an exciting time in your life,

Can I ask will u get maternity pay and leave if its temporary contract

SweetPea86 · 28/10/2013 22:15

Awww nice one congratulations.

I'd tell them in a week or 2 but it's entirely up to you. I told work At 4 weeks due to serve sickness I couldn't of hid it. I'm too 17 weeks and if I'm not throwing up still I'm crying in a corner some were lol if I didn't tell work I was preg they might of through I had "issues" lol

You could wait til your 20 week scan and just say you wanted the all clear from that until you announced it - might sound a bit better than saying it straight after you got the job.
