I had my 20 week scan 4 weeks ago today, the lady said his heart, brain, etc all look fine (and we found out we're having a little boy!)
He was in a funny position though and they couldn't see the spine properly. So I have to go back today for the spina bifida checks.
I kept forgetting to take my folic acid up to 12 weeks Blush so now I'm terrified my baby will have something wrong with his spine caused by stupid forgetful me :(
Anyone else got experience of this and can reassure me?

No experience but hope it all goes ok. Good they are being thorough & giving you another appointment to go back. A lot of women forget their folic acid by the way

I'm one of the forgetful ones....I took it but not every day.

I'm 34+4 and baby is doing brilliantly.

Good luck xxx

folic acid is present in food too, so forgetting to take it sometimes is not a disaster

good luck - I am sure it will all be fine

It is a necessary check under current regs and being recalled is to be expected if baby was lying the wrong way for the Sonographer to see it. There are however several signs of spina bifida that can be seen in the head so if they told you that looked ok then it is very unlikely that baby has spina bifida. Don't worry, try to look forward to seeing baby again.

I had to go back a week after my 20 week scan with dd as she was in an awkward position. They tried all sorts to get her to move to no avail. Like you it was the spine they couldnt see, i think they just have to be able to say they saw everyhing on the check list and if they cant it doesnt mean anything is wrong, just that they didnt see that part.
Tbh i didnt really worry and everything was just fine. My dd is 7 now and still as stubborn as the day she was on the 20 week scan!

RobinSparkles · 10/10/2013 12:51

Had to have DD1 scanned 3 times because the awkward little bugger was in a funny position and sonographer couldn't see her spine! She was/is fine. She's a healthy, happy 6 year old.

Still hardwork though.

No experience but hope the scan is ok. Sounds as though they're being thorough rather than having something specific to worry about. Folic acid is in food, and isn't a magic bullet, so I wouldn't worry too much. Many people have healthy babies without taking it so although a nice to do, I can't help but feel it is essential.

Best of luck!

I very nearly had to go back as the baby wouldn't move off of his back for the spine measurement. I remembered someone telling me that their obs consultant told then that if they won't move to drink a cold can of coke from the vending machine and it usually works. Maybe try that if lo's still stubborn.

HolaGuapo · 11/10/2013 07:24

Just a quick update, everything is fine with the baby. When the sonographer first tried scanning me, he was still in a funny position and I had to roll around but he still wouldn't move. So I had to go and walk around for half an hour and when I came back the baby had turned onto his front so she managed to get the measurement and said everything looked okay.
He then proceeded to keep me up half the night prodding me in the side with a random body part, but couldn't possibly bring himself to move on the scan when we needed him to Grin
