Stretchmarks - when did you first spot them?

Sorry for repeating a subject that's probably been done to death. But at 28 weeks tomorrow and touch wood no stretchmarks so far but I seem to have started becoming obsessed with strecthmarks. I know its different for everyone but just wondering, when did you notice your first signs of strecthmarks?

I spotted mine after the baby was born. Thought I'd got away with it but it turns out they were on the underside of he bump where I couldn't see them!

roweeena · 08/10/2013 15:16

2 pregnancies and no stretch marks with either - my mum didn't either. I think if your going to get them no matter which cream you use you are going to get them IYSWIM

elcranko · 08/10/2013 15:27

I had none until about 37wks-ish. I started getting a couple from then but it was during the two weeks that I was overdue that I got the majority of them! Hopefully you'll be luckier than I was Smile

Ask your mum and nan - it's all down to genes. I was lucky enough to not get any, neither did my mum or nan Smile

FortyFacedFuckers · 08/10/2013 15:33

I hate to burst your bubble OP but I didn't have any until 40 weeks then they all appeared over night. If only my DS was born at 39+6 and not 40+2

onedogandababy · 08/10/2013 15:35

40+4. I know they weren't there before as I'd checked under bump in the mirror. if only she'd been a bit earlier!

kissmyshineymetalass · 08/10/2013 15:48

I don't think it is all down to genes because my mum got loads but I've had six babies and didn't get any stretch marks

Madratlady · 08/10/2013 16:00

Ooh my mum doesn't have any from either of her pregnancies even though she was stick thin when she got pregnant with me. Does that mea I'm likely to escape too?

EmB1715 · 08/10/2013 16:14

25 weeks!

LittlePeaPod · 08/10/2013 16:17

Yes I thought this would be the case.. It's a bit like the lottery.... My mum has no strecthmarks and she had a set of twins and then me and I was a big baby 10lb9 but my sister has a lot. She too didn't get them in first pregnancy but they appeared overnight in second pregnancy about 39 weeks I think

When I was about 11 years old!

But then when I was pregnant, I think at about 25ish weeks. I had CRAZY angry red ones the whole length of my stomach right up to almost my boobs. They faded so much that when I met dh, he thought I didn't have any. He still thinks I don't have any! Muppet.

Soontobemama · 08/10/2013 16:20

At 39 weeks when my baby dropped I got some small stretchmarks right at the bottom of my bump.

EmB1715 · 08/10/2013 16:21

I had them at 11 too! Genetics must play a part as all the women in my family have had them. The ones from puberty (which I was only just content with at 23 years old!) are now extending in an angry red colour Sad

Supersesame · 08/10/2013 16:24

The genetics thing isn't always true.
Both my mum and sister have stretchmarks from both puberty and pregnancy on their hips, boobs and legs. They seem to pick up strechmarks very easily.
I didn't get any in puberty or with my first DC and reached 40 + 8. Due to the genetics, I piled on bio-oil twice a day to see if I could avoid them and I'm convinced the bio-oil helped.
I'm 30 weeks with DC2 and nothing yet and i'm back using bio-oil as much as I can. I've got through about 500ml so far!
Fingers crossed I will escape this time too.

TallulahBetty · 08/10/2013 16:39

Not always true then I guess, but often Smile

Ditsydebs · 08/10/2013 18:32

Before my pregnancy was even confirmed as my boobs grew so quickly at the beginning! I didn't get any on my stomach until week 38 with DS 2 but I have them all over my legs and hips. My sister doesn't have any but my mum has lots so do think it could be something in the genes also I did go from 9.5 stone to nearly 14 so don't think that helped! Lol!

lilstar · 08/10/2013 20:23

After baby was born. I had none throughout my pregnancy but then they appeared. The way I look at it is like a balloon. All round, smooth and shiney whrn its blown up and when it deflates gets shrivled, loose and wrinkly. However...a few people do have very elastic skin and get away with few stretch marks.

PastaBeeandCheese · 09/10/2013 07:13

About 37 weeks on the very bottom of the bump. I think it was DD's head that broke the camel's back!

They were red, angry and itchy for a while but faded well.

MrsMuskett · 09/10/2013 07:29

38+4 currently and after having non at all I'm getting loads of little ones under my bump,ad some over my appendix scar. I've been using cream twice a day,my mum didn't have any with two kids n neither did my gran with ten!so goes to show you just can't tell who or when they will come :(

Chacha23 · 09/10/2013 08:18

nothing until 37 weeks, then they started showing up on my bump. Still nothing too awful, though.

rootypig · 09/10/2013 08:24

Take a pregnancy safe fish oil, keep your fluids up and use DermaMum products, the cream or oil (from Boots or Sainsburys). Fragrance free and stops the itching, they were the best creams I found by a mile and pretty cheap by comparison to some, a £12 pot will last a few months (and I spend a LOT of creams) - I am stretchmark free on this routine and my mum had loads.

I've read the younger you are the more at risk you are - and that is borne out anecdotally in my family. So if you're in your late twenties onward, you might be ok.

rootypig · 09/10/2013 08:25

Second thought re creams - even if they don't prevent stretchmarks, they will definitely help your skin to recover, and the time to catch them is as they appear.

katebakes · 10/10/2013 00:20

Yesterday under my left boob....exactly where my mother has hers!

I've been slathering mama mio tummy butter, palmers oil, palmers stretch mark cream, EVERYTHING....BUT THEY FOUND ME.

Meh, it's all part of being a mama, as long as baby and I are healthy I don't mind :)

Shellywelly1973 · 10/10/2013 02:14

Honestly I did EVERYTHING I could not to get stretch marks but they started at about 20 weeks & were hideous!

By the time I had my ds they started below my knees & ended just below my belly button. They used to be deep purple!

I've never worn a bikini or skirt since. Although all the colour is gone, the skin is actually damaged. I don't think about them too much now...after 24 years im used to them!!
