I start my maternity leave 6 weeks on Monday and was told by my office manager today that I have 6 days holiday I need to use before that or I will loose them. So, I could take a random 6 days off, stick the 6 days on the front of my maternity leave (so finish at the same time but my actual leave not start until a week later IYSWIM) OR have 6 4 day weeks in a row!

I knew I had a few days left to take and I was planning on just putting them at the front of my maternity leave but now I know I have 6 weeks left and 6 days to use it's so tempting to see if I can get away with taking every Friday off between now and finishing up on December 2nd. But at the same time I can also see the advantage of having an extra week at the end of my maternity leave. If you were me what would you do?

How many weeks will you be at your intended maternity leave date?

Anothermrssmith · 08/10/2013 13:39

33 weeks, finishing a bit earlier because I know I will be induced at 38 weeks, and was planning on taking about 7 months off.

5 weeks should be ample. If I were you I'd see about having those shorter weeks!

BadFam1 · 08/10/2013 13:55

I would kill for shorter weeks right now! :)

April13 · 08/10/2013 14:02

I have to use all my AL too so I am doing a month of shorter weeks, taking the Friday Mondays off, 4 days off, 3 days on :)

beela · 08/10/2013 14:06

I'd do shorter weeks.

cravingcake · 08/10/2013 14:22

I would do shorter weeks, and treat yourself to something nice on your 'holiday' day each week - whether thats shopping, a pedicure, pregnancy massage, lazy lie-in & read a book etc.

elcranko · 08/10/2013 15:31

I'd go with the shorter weeks too.

Id do shorter weeks x

Shorter weeks! From 9th november im pretty much doing one shift a week till mat leave starts in december-using my annual leave up :)

Vixjane · 08/10/2013 16:27

I'm having a day off each week for my last four weeks before maternity leave and it's bliss! I have been having Wednesdays off and it really breaks the week up. I'd say go for the shorter weeks!

greentshirt · 08/10/2013 17:22

im going to go against the grain and say I would leave at the same time and have the maternity leave end a week later than planned. 5 weeks will be plenty of time to relax and prepare without having the extra days on top!

Xenadog · 08/10/2013 17:31

Shorter weeks too - those Fridays off will be bliss.

It was a nice idea!

You all convinced me that short weeks was the way to go (not that I needed much convincing to be fair) but its not going to happen. My dept at work is just me and one other and my colleague still has 4 days holiday to take, which as its unlikely they will bring anyone in to cover my maternity leave (though that's another story!) he wants to make sure he uses before I finish up. Given the short notice involved and wanting to be fair to him means it doesn't look like it will be doable. I only started back yesterday after a week off and don't really want another week off between now and then so thinking the first 6 days of my maternity leave will actually be annual leave instead.

Was a nice idea though sigh
