Hi

I'm just wondering on how the familial likelihood of twins is?

I only ask because my dad was a twin.

Thanks

My dads sisters are twins and me, my sisters and all my cousins have all had single pregnancies which total 12 in all .. So wouldn't worry too much

From what I make out it would be the mums side that would pass the twin gene down, I could be wrong but that's my understanding, my bff had twins last year with no history of twins in her or her dp family.

Depends on the type. Non if twins where 2 eggs are released can be hereditary but non id twins are where an egg splits and called a "freak" occurance. I was told id twins can't have id twins themselves but it turns out they can they are are just less likely. I am an id twin with id twins. Love being a twin mum :)

Aaah just wondering as it was on my mind!

I don't have my mum round anymore to ask questions so sorry if things I post seem a bit basic.

Thanks all :)

Identical twins is believed to be a random occurrence. Non ID twins can have a genetic cause as there can be a family tendency to release more than one egg each month. This is also more likely with increased maternal age and increased number of previous children.

If your father is a non identical twin then the chances of you having non ID twins is higher. Non ID twins occur in 1/80 births but if one of your parents are non id twins the chances become around 1/27. Both my maternal and paternal grandmothers had fraternal twins and so did I.

Twins have skipped a generation in the women on my mothers side since records began (ie, my great grandmother was a twin, my grandmother wasn't, my mum was, I wasn't) until me - everyone expected this pregnancy to be twins but I am definitely only cooking one :)

We cannot find twins anywhere in my family and here I am 22 weeks pregnant with a boy and a girl! Smile

I think there are some theories that I'd twins can be hereditary on the male side. Not read much about it though.
Non id twins are hereditary on the female side, but that can start at anytime. There are no twins in my family and I have non id wins.

HystericalParoxysm · 07/10/2013 18:31

Non ID twins are hereditary on the male side actually so I'm told Grin obviously it can be just random too.
