On Thursday I finally did a pregnancy test which came up positive, complete shock! I have a 10 month old that I am breastfeeding and I've only had one period since having him which was in April (I think). Then yesterday while driving I had some period like pains and when I got out of the car I had a gush of blood which soaked my clothes ran down my legs etc. At hospital dr told me my cervix was still closed, and I had to go back for a scan today. Baby apparently is ok but there is a large area of blood in my womb about 4 times the size of baby, she said she thought it was bleeding in the linings of the womb. What I don't understand is what caused it I haven't done strained myself at all. Has anyone else had this? Did it work out ok? Got to go back for another scan in two weeks to see if the area of blood has shrunk? In the past 4 days I've gone from total disbelief to joy, then to panic now I haven't got a clue how to feel.

No advice, but ((hugs)) it must have been horrendously scary for you. I hope someone comes along soon who can be more reassuring.

Hope the pregnancy pans out well. Good luck for the scan in 2 weeks.

Sorry moody, not sure but thought i would bump this for you to see if anyone else has had any similar experience.

Sorry your'e going through this...I don't know, but it might be a subchorionic haematoma. In other words, a clot thats formed possibly from a small tear in the placenta......its fairly common, and there can be big ones and small ones. I know several women who've had this, and most of them have been fine...and its NOT caused by straining, its just bad luck. That said, now you have it - do take it easy. Even if its not that, take it easy, in fact!
It might not be that at all - would ahve thought the doctor would recognize and name it if it was - but it does sound very like what my friends have experienced.
Wishing you well, and hope all will be ok with your baby....fingers tightly crossed for you.

ps meant to say (sorry, tired..) SCHs are often reabsorbed over a few weeks...they can cause problems, but not always by any means. It depends if it gets bigger, or starts to heal - I think.
Next time you go in, do ask the doctor if she thinks it could be that - they should be able to answer you, and once you know what it is you'll be able to find other women on here who can relate and hopefully put your mind at rest. xxxx

I had a heavy gushing bleed like you describe, just after finding out I was preg.

Had an ultrasound 4 weeks later which showed baby was fine.

Doctor wasn't even concerned to get more details as just said 'oh, well, bleeding in early preg is common.'
Still don't know what caused it but it sounds similar to yours, have been fine so far (25 weeks preg now)

wishing you all the best, let us know how you are!

Hi moodywren,

I have had sch with this pregnancy ( my hospital called it extra chrionic haemorrage), although I did not gush with blood, I bled for the first 13 weeks. I too had the period like cramps you described the early pregnancy unit said the period like pains i described was normal with ech as it the body trying to expel the blood and also its normal to get cramping with pregnancy.

I'm afraid I do not know what causd the ech but everything has worked out fine for me so far, I am now 28 weeks and baby doing well.

Good luck

i've had this too. with dd, i started bleeding at 6 wks and finaly stopped at 23wks pg!. at a scan at 8 wks they found a patch of blood in the lining. it was explained as, when the placenta starts to grow, it is sending out little blood vessels into the wall of the uterus which can cause bleeding in themselves, or can sometimes become detatched and again, cause bleeding. after some quite alarming blood losses early in the pregnancy, i then lost brown blood for weeks after. dd was fine despite all this and is now 4.
