Maternity clothes sizing

Have seen a few things online in H&M, Mamas & Papas and New Look. Anyone has an idea what the sizing is like?

H&M is normally on the small side, is it the same in maternity too?

How about Mamas & Papas? Have seen a dress I like but don't know if to go for my pre-preg size or bigger/smaller? Can't be bothered sending stuff back and forth.

Thanks!

I've bought everything in the size I was before I was pre pregnancy, ie 6. Most of it was fine. Asos/H&M/Topshop were fine. I bought a few things from Next in an 8 as it's their smallest size. Their size 8 is relatively huge I thought, and hasn't really lasted well. A bit frumpy I think but that is just personal opinion. I've found Asos to the the nicest stuff. Those are the only places I've bought maternity stuff so can't comment on anything else

Thanks JoJo!

Anyone else?

I went a size down when I was pregnant from 16 to 14 in maternity. I think this is because my largest part normally is my stomach so that was what made me a 16 whereas the rest of me is a 14 so in maternity clothes the stomach doesn't really matter as that's big anyway iyswim.

Ironically I looked the slimmest I've been pregnant because of this.

I know for others it has been different though so worth trying stuff on.

I wear the same size as before :) 8 in maternity, and occasionally I just buy a size 12 (non maternity)

Good luck x

Asos have been really unpredictable for me - some of their leggings fine in my normal 10, some still a squeeze in a 12, and the tops in a 10 are huge. It's SO ANNOYING that so few places have stuff you can try on in store!

New look I've gone down a size but that's also because I normally have a big belly and normally wear clothes larger to avoid looking like a stuffed sausage but am now wearing tighter clothes as its more flattering

New Look I found exactly the same as pre-preg sizing. H&M I had to go up three sizes! Not tried M&P.

Ive had a few bits from Next, they were ok, jeans quite big (Im a 16 - 18 so I went for 18), Jojo Maman Bebe I find to be generous ( dress and bump band) and Mothercare are perfect fit.

Shellywelly1973 · 02/10/2013 10:55

Most places I've bought maternity clothes from have been fine & bought my usual size...except ASOS. Im a size 8 & im growing out of their maternity clothes at 23 weeks. H& M, GAP, New Look all fine for sizing.

MrsHoratioNelson · 02/10/2013 11:02

I foun ASOS small, particularly across the boobs, but that might have a lot to do with the 5 (yes FIVE Hmm) cup sizes I have gained.

I didnt buy any H & M maternity, but have recently bought some nursing stuff and they seem to come up big, unlike normal H&M.

Debenhams and New Look I found quite true to size. Mamas and Papas jeans were big but I wouldn't really recommend them, they fall down all the time, even more than normal maternity jeans. JoJo Maman Bebe came up big.

Some of the best things I have worn weren't maternity wear at all - a wrap dress or two from pre-pregnancy, a dress with a knot in the middle from Tesco (£16!!) that I was still wearing at 36 weeks and an empire line dress from Phase Eight.

The trouble with maternity wear is that its a bit big for aaaages, fits perfectly for about 3 weeks and then is suddenly too small Hmm.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll just have to chance it and see...

I fit in the same size as usual. H&m small sizes though I think. I'm right at the end and a few of my plain vest tops are just a little on the short side so would suggest going up a size but all dresses, dressy tops and trousers have been fine all the way through. x

TarkaTheOtter · 02/10/2013 12:54

I think you just have to try stuff on with maternity wear. I have two pairs of asos jeans in the same style and size. One pair fits perfectly, the other are huge. H&M sizing really depends on the style. I am a size 10/12 when not pregnant and have some very tight size 14 maternity trousers from there but have also had things come up large.
It's annoying because so much is now online only so look for places with free and easy returns (like asos).

I'm a size 10 and am just wear h&m, new look maternity dresses and red herring maternity jeans in a size 10.

Discogeek · 02/10/2013 19:10

I've bought from asos mainly with a few h&m and topshop bits and got my normal (size 12 or 14 depending on which shop) size without any problems.
I found mamas and papas to be huge and quite badly fitting, not tried new look but heard good things from friends.
