Can't feel the baby at nearly 20 weeks

I'm between 19 and 20 weeks and i can't feel the baby moving. A couple of weeks ago i felt a funny bubble popping sensation but absolutely nothing since then. Is this normal? It's my first pregnancy and i'm a size 10 usually. People keep asking me if i've felt it move and it's making me worry!

I didn't feel mine until 20+1. I had anterior placenta, so on the front of my uterus and this masked movements until they were much stronger. Try not to worry.

DontCallMeDaughter · 30/09/2013 08:26

I think that's really normal for 1st pregnancy. I felt those flutters earlier but the first time I really felt dd was around 22 weeks when she had the hiccups. Don't worry, it will happen. It's bloody lovely when it does Smile

Fairydogmother · 30/09/2013 08:36

I felt very little at 20 weeks. Really it takes until much later so try and not worry too much

KippyVonKipperson · 30/09/2013 09:19

I think 17 weeks for a first pregnancy is average, so I'm sure you'll feel it anytime soon. But when was your last check up? If you are concerned call your midwife and ask her for a check up, or go to your maternity unit. They won't mind at all and better to be overcautious in these situations

Did you have a dating scan? Have a look and see if the report mentions anterior placenta - as Sanch says, that's one reason why feeling movement may happen later.

mumingball · 30/09/2013 10:46

don't worry, you will start feeling it soon! it took me a lot and i wasn't sure what i was perceiving for a long time - esp if you are busy/focused on something else most of the time! people unfortunately have this gift to come up with the wrong questions while you're pregnant...

elcranko · 30/09/2013 11:07

I had an anterior placenta and it was about 23 weeks before I felt anything.

Fozziebearmum2be · 30/09/2013 11:22

I felt mine quite early (not regular movements though) but as others have said this is because my placenta is at the back. Others I have spoken with felt it much later and one lady didn't feel hers at all, but that was normal for her.

Agree with pp-you must have your 20 week scan soon which will hopefully make you feel better.

Remember everyone's pregnancy is different and listen to your body, don't let other people worry you by making you think your pregnancy should be the same as theirs.

Iheartcrunchiebars · 30/09/2013 11:36

I was about 23 before I felt anything.

Natale28 · 30/09/2013 13:16

Thank you all for your replies. Yes i had a dating scan and they didn't say anything about an anterior placenta. I have a my next scan in a week so hopefully it'll all be fine! It's hatd when people keep saying that i 'must be feeling things by now' and my answer is always no!

Hopefully it's all fine and i'll try not to panic. I had a consultant appointment 2 weeks ago as i have high platelets in my blood and a midwife listened to the heartbeat then and all seemed fine. It's so hard not to worry!

Could just be your baby isn't much of a wriggler. When my mum was pregnant with me she barely felt anything throughout the 38 weeks, but with my brother she kept complaining of feeling bruised because he was so lively! Have a chat to your midwife about it, I'm sure that so long as the scans and such show your baby is growing well there is absolutely nothing to be worried about.

Donnadoon · 30/09/2013 16:01

I felt my first at 22 weeks...try not to worry x

onlysettleforbutterflies · 30/09/2013 16:03

I didn't feel a thing until 23 weeks, don't worry.

jerryfudd · 30/09/2013 16:06

I didn't feel anything until 24 weeks - and I had 2 in there!

Franykins · 30/09/2013 16:28

I had first flutterings at 14 weeks but proper movements about 17 I think. I am carrying twins. jerryfudd that's mad you didn't feel anything with twins until 24 weeks, since I first felt them properly they haven't stopped, little wrigglers Smile but like pp's have said everyone is different.

Hubb · 30/09/2013 16:34

I also didn't feel anything until 23ish weeks, it's my first too

WillYouDoTheFandango · 30/09/2013 16:36

I had an anterior placenta and felt nothing until 26 weeks. On the bright side I was never woken by the baby kicking in the night Smile. Congratulations on your baby Thanks

StuckOnARollercoaster · 30/09/2013 16:49

I'm another one that couldn't feel anything till 24 weeks.
Congrats and good luck for rest of your pg...

creamcarpet · 30/09/2013 16:52

Hey, this is my first post ever! I had to add my two penneth in as I'm in pretty much the same position. I am 21+4 and only in the last 3 days have I felt anything, and I'm still not 100% it was the baby moving. On Friday night I ate a really spicy meal (I'm craving curry and anything hot) and later that evening when sat still, I felt a vibration. When I got in bed that night, and again in the morning, I felt a few thuds and flutters. I had to lie still and concentrate but they were definitely feelings I don't normally get. Since then when I lie still I can feel the odd thump/flutter. I also have an anterior placenta (which I found out about at the 20wk scan) so was told not to expect much movement any time soon.

Natale28 · 30/09/2013 17:18

Thanks everyone! I'm so glad i posted this because it seem quite common and has put my mind at rest! I'll just try to be patient until my scan next week and not think bad thoughts!

Good luck to all with your pregnancies x
