How early can you get gestational diabetes? After a 10.9 lb baby at 38+2 last time, the hospital are sure I had undiagnosed gd, I had a no of symptoms which I had told my mw but she just dismissed them. (am normally a size10, if that matters). I know they test at 26 weeks, but I think I may have it already and am only 13 weeks. Or is it just me worrying over nothing, any thoughts greatfully received as am seeing the consultant on Tuesday.

I don know, but I'm also worried about this. I too had many classic symptoms that were dismissed and ended up giving birth to a 10lb 9oz baby too. :(

Hi Cath, I had GD with DD and they tested at 28 weeks. There might be excess sugar in your urine which could be a sign so maybe speak to your midwife. In the meantime if you're worried you could cut back (out?) the sugar and stick to complex carbs like brown bread, brown rice, etc. Mine was diet controlled last time and that's what I had to do.
I felt better for it and it's healthier but it is hard work.
If I were you I would push for an earlier GTT test too. HTH.

I think they do a random blood glucose from your booking bloods, but if you want to be checked you could go to your GP who can do a finger prick test.

I was diagnosed at 8 weeks this time as I had GD in my last pregnancy and had finger pricked myself a few times as I still had my monitor and readings were high. However, it's unusual to be diagnosed so early and for that reason they are questioning whether its type 2, although I don't think it is.

DS 2 was my biggest, 10lb at 38 weeks and they did test me for GD in that pregnancy. They said I didn't have it. However, thresholds for diagnosis have since been lowered, so it's possible I did, but as DS was also 58cm long, he was on about the same centimes height/weight wise, which doesn't really indicate GD. DD, where I did have GD was born at the same gestation and was 3lb lighter!
