Should I have the GD test?

Hi, this is DC3 and at my booking in I was told I'd need the GD test at 28 weeks because since having DC2 one of my sisters has had GD in 2 pregnancies. I don't mind having the test but both my DC have additional needs so an average week for me has a minimum of 3 appointments/therapy sessions, plus I work, so time is pretty limited.

My eldest has type 1 diabetes so I wondered if i'd be ok just testing myself from time to time, before and after eating etc, as I have all the kit and am familiar with blood numbers. Am asking as I've got my 20 week scan tomorrow and am meant to book in for the GD then, but I don t know what's best. Normally I wouldn't hesitate to get checked as I think better safe than sorry, but it's just the idea of a morning at hospital trying to juggle my other commitments.

Any advice very welcome, thanks in advance.

I had GD. One of the risks of undiagnosed/uncontrolled diabetes in pregnancy is death of the baby after delivery.

There are other potentially serious risks, as you know from ds1 diabetes is a very dangerous disease if untreated. It is the same in pregnancy, except the risks are to you and a baby.

Levels in pregnancy are different to standard diabetes.

Get tested.

At the end of the day this is a hospital appointment for dc3, once born would you let them miss a health appointment because their sibs had already had appointments that week?
