Has anyone taken iodine supplements?

Just come back from my first meeting with the midwife, i´m in Spain by the way and have been told to take iodine. Just wondered if this is usual in the UK as I don´t remember it with dd?

It's been suggested to me because I have low thyroid anyway but not as a supplement in its own right, just as part of a pregnancy multivitamin.

Iodine is an antimicrobial agent that can be used topically to kill bacteria and prevent infections. I've never heard of it being used in pregnancy!! I should check it out further before using it! Have you tried doing a google search?? Are you sure she didn't say iron??

I was told to be very careful with hair dyes in early pregnancy as they may contain iodine and this could harm the baby. Not sure if it's true or not, but I would do my research before taking them (unless you have a specific problem related to iodine deficiency, of course)

Thanks all, it seems to be the thing here in Spain. Now I´ve learnt the word, ive noticed it twice, once added to salt and as a recommendation in a pregnancy mag. I´ve looked at my multi vit and it already contains Iodine, so I´m not going to take anymore. Will have to look at an English multivit and see if it is contained in there.
