did a urine test at 12 week and got a letter today saying i am infected with group B strep... had no idea what is, told to be injected antibiotics during labour to reduce risk of passing to baby.

does anyone have it? anyone had it and did it affect ur pregnancy and labour process?

Google GBSS and that will give you a very helpful and detailed website with all you need to know.

first of all it doesn't affect baby until your waters break so don't worry about it as such!

if you end up with a C-section baby will not come into contact with the infection at all.

here are my experiences with DS5 and DD (we only disvovered I had this when pg with DS4, but he was ELSC)

it wasn't an injection but IV drip with antibiotics.

my waters broke with DD and I started contractions with DS5 so had to go to hospital straight away so they can start the drip asap.
from that point the we were hoping that I will be able to receive 4 hours worth of dose before baby's born (tick) to avoid having to give baby any antibiotics.

with both they had to be observed for 12 hours after birth before they could be discharged.

if they had been born before the 4 hours elapsed they would have been given antibiotics and kept in for a 24- hours observation.

so as per my experience it really is something that can be handled efficiently.

btw I must have had it with my first 3 as well based on the symptoms, but I never knew. I'm pretty sure DS3 contracted it to a degree as he had a lot of ear infections.

once you have it you'll always have it so you'll have to notify GP/MW for any future pgs.

hth.

any questions just ask. Smile

I had IV antibiotics during labour for DD but there weren't any staff or facilities in time when DS was born. He was v healthy and once I saw he was ok I was actually quite pleased he missed them but I think you'll be better looked after hopefully!

I found out late into pregnanu with dc1 that I had it during a check for something else. It's good that you know about it as loads don't know that they've got it and it can also come and go so by the time you're due to give birth it might well have gone. I had IV antibiotics every 4 hours during my 16 hour labour. Dc was observed for 24 hours as it was actually 1 min outside the 4 hour window at time of birth. All was fine! I didn't have +ve test during second pregnancy.
