Bump shapes

Ok, I know it's just old wives tales but we don't know baby's gender and just amusing ourselves by guessing. :D

I've heard that if you have a "pointed" bump, it's a boy, and more "spread out" is a girl. There are conflicting statements about bump positions - previously I heard carrying low means a girl, but then I read somewhere that it's a sign of a girl.

What bump shape did you/are having, and what was/is your baby's gender?

Argh, baby brain! That was supposed to say a boy (without crossing...)

I really believe that a boy is like a football shape shoved up jumper and that the lady still keeps a bit of definition round her waist, and doesn't look preg from the back.

Whereas a girl tends to spread all round - more barrel like, losing all waist definition and looking preg from all angles.

This was very true for me (I had a boy) and most of the preg people I have known over the last few years.

I am now 38wks with DC2 and predict another boy as I am all out front again, but have put weight on all over this time so am not as sure was I was with DS.

Most people I know say its all a load of nonsense though! Grin

DerbyNottsLeicsNightNanny · 04/09/2013 15:16

oh and I reckon low for boys, high for girls.

daimbardiva · 04/09/2013 15:17

I was the same shape for both pregnancies. I carried low, all out in front. One was a boy, one was a girl!

DaleyBump · 04/09/2013 15:19

My bump is just big and kind of in the middle. Apparently I don't look pregnant from the back! Grin I'm having a boy :) not carrying particularly low or high just... In the middle Confused

Cheerymum · 04/09/2013 15:20

I barely look pregnant from the back, but have an enormous beach ball out front!! 35w with twin girls!

Razzdazz · 04/09/2013 16:07

Ds1 all out front (body was in not stretched condition then though lol) dd1 it was like she had been thrown at my middle and spread everywhere!! Ds2 I was fairly roundish with and now pregnant with dd2 and all out front and can't see I'm pregnant from back or so I keep telling myself Grin

MrsVDB · 04/09/2013 16:24

I'm all over but pretty low (still early days at 20w though) and its a boy

Hyperhelpmum · 04/09/2013 16:34

I'm all out front and low. Literally a beach ball up front. 30 weeks with a girl! I was big all over with my two boys. No rhyme or reason in my opinion. How could gender of child effect shape of mother? Each woman/ pregnancy is different. Muscle tone, skin elasticity, body shape etc!

charlottesweb87 · 04/09/2013 17:43

I am really just all bump and gained no obvious weight elsewhere. I am carrying low and a pointy bump and it's a boy Smile

CuteLittleToes · 04/09/2013 18:13

I don't look pregnant from my back, but my bump isn't really ball-like either... We keep thinking its a boy but probably just for that reason it will be a girl :D although I did think a few times that maybe it's actually a girl... Oh well, will find out in a couple month!

LittlePeaPod · 04/09/2013 18:35

I am all pointy bump and you can't tell from behind i am pregnant. I am carrying high I think and we are having a girl.

Blondie276 · 04/09/2013 18:46

I am carrying in every direction possible and seem to have put on weight everywhere ! Quite worrying actually!
I've been told its 70% a girl ( and really hope it is) which would be in line with what others have said. You can tell in pregnant from every angle!!

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 04/09/2013 18:55

Ds was a ball-up-the-jumper, dd was spread around. This one so far is a ball, so maybe a boy....

However, my mum has had 7 and says that it is all bollocks! I reckon she'd know!

dimdommilpot · 04/09/2013 19:35

I had a tiny football shaped bump and had a girl weighing 8lb 6oz. My friend who was a month behind me had a mammoth bump and put weight on all over, she also had a girl weighing 8lb 4oz. Its all genetics IMO.

ZeroTolerance · 04/09/2013 20:39

How on earth could a child's genitals affect the shape of your bump???

I am having a girl. From the back I do not look pregnant at all. I still have a waist. I have a very neat football-up-the-jumper bump. It is quite high too.

I looked exactly the same when I was carrying my son.

Kayshields · 05/09/2013 06:15

My first was a girl and I put weight on everywhere, im now on my second and literally have put no weight on apart from the obvious low bump (im 36 weeks) but again its a girl :) so I don't think it really matters about the bump.

ZeroTolerance · 05/09/2013 14:42

Also, and I know people don't like to admit this, but "carrying all over" usually suggests you've put on a ton of weight. Having a neat bump means very little weight gain, all baby. I'm almost at my due date and have only gained 20lb. Every ounce on the bump. If I'm honest, I know I've not eaten much this pregnancy, have had no appetite at all. All scans suggest baby is a normal weight. Baby is a girl.

People who gain 5 stone are never going to have a tiny neat high-up bump. And saying "I gained 5 stone, it's just genetic" is kind of disingenuous. You gain 5 stone when you put 5 stone's worth of food in your mouth. And then don't be surprised if you end up "carrying all over" - boy or girl - the weight has to go somewhere. Can't store 5 stone entirely in your face!

I suppose what I'm saying is that bump size and shape is nothing to do with the gender and everything to do with weight gain.

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 05/09/2013 15:18

I'd agree with that. Dd, my carry-all-over one, was my first and the one with which I was least sick and had most leisure (ie stuff face with cakes) time. I put on 3 1/2 stone Shock. With Ds, and this one - both balls-up-jumper - I have been much more sick and put on much less weight. So the next question is, does the amount of sickness indicate gender? Wink

DaleyBump · 05/09/2013 15:22

I'm 28 weeks and have put on two and a half stone. I have a neat, all out in front bump. I know it has nothing to do with gender, just wanted to point that out. I just haven't put weight on anywhere else except for my boobs and belly.

LittlePeaPod · 05/09/2013 16:47

Zero I agree with your weight game comment. This is my first and I am 23 weeks and I have put on 8lbs. From behind you cant tell I am pregnant but from the front it's all neat high up bump and massive boobs. I have been sick but I have also been going to the gym and eating really healthy when I do eat.
