I cannot believe my stupid dh. I'm 37 weeks pregnant and he just served sausages from the bbq back on the plate they were on raw. Didn't realise until we had all eaten them. Am I being dramatic? Just had a huge go at him what a prat I mean it's basic food hygiene!!! Is there anything I can do as an antidote?? Friends suggested drink lemon juice or a shot of whiskey (surely no more dangerous for baby than raw pork??!!) Really panicking now if I get food poisoning he is dead! Angry Angry Angry

Wait it out for a few hours. Sausages are in a skin so I'm totally guessing here by saying it might not be as bad as say chicken breast??????

Gosh that was unhelpful!

Breathe!

You didn't eat raw pork, you ate cooked pork that had been on the same plate as raw pork - ok, not great but the chance of you getting food poisoning from it is pretty small.

Food poisoning from pork is likely to make you feel rotten, but it isn't dangerous for the baby. I don't think there's anything you can do now except cross your fingers and hope.

I read an article recently that said due to the way in which sausages etc are processed now, there is a much smaller risk from raw or rare pork.
Ring your midwife tomorrow and get their advice, but try not to worry!

Whiskey as an antidote? Are you quite mad? Please don't do that.

You're very unlikely to come to any harm but if you get any symptoms of food poisoning (diarrhoea etc) then call your midwife.

You're likely to be fine, but your husband needs to learn some basic food hygiene. It could have been much worse.

rallytog1 · 01/09/2013 18:16

You'll be fine. At 37 weeks there is very little damage you can do to the baby. Worst case scenario is that you may have an upset tummy but it's highly unlikely. Chill.

My Aunty used to eat raw sausages as a snack. She's still alive :)

FondantNancy · 01/09/2013 22:31

I think you'll be fine.

(I also used to eat raw sausages, as a child!!)

PinkApple86 · 02/09/2013 09:33

Thanks everyone. I woke up this morning still alive. Just a bit of a panic yday as I'm rather ocd about meat.

How irritating! You were right to have a go at him! My thinking though is that the tiny amount of raw juice that was on the plate would have cooked on contact with the very hot straight off the BBQ sausages so not too bad. And as others said it wouldn't harm the baby only you and you would feel poorly withing an hour or so anyway so looks like you're in the clear. Bet he won't do it again! x

According to my mw, the worry with food poisoning is simply that if it's bad enough, you'll get dehydrated; nothing more sinister.
I've had food poisoning before pg, and since getting pg. I have never become dehydrated as a result, it takes some serious bugs to do that.
Silly of your DH though - young children aren't so resilient as adults, and he'll need to be careful when the baby is here (once it's eating solids, obvs). Glad you're okay.

Listeria (from soft cheese, unpasteurised dairy, deli meats, pate) is the one that's really serious and can cause stillbirth, and you are 20 times more likely to be infected when pregnant than not - it can be treated with anti-biotics though.

Other food poisoning - I think it is e-coli in uncooked meats or salmonella in chicken - isn't dangerous for the baby.
