Most of the advice I found recommends highlights rather than a full dye job during pregnancy. This is because the chemicals don't touch the scalp so there's no risk of absorption into the blood stream. This is also what my hairdresser recommended. I had highlights throughout. Not that there is any proven risk either way, it just seems to be the general opinion.

www.nhs.uk/chq/pages/949.aspx - it is ok to dye your hair and I certainly did during both of my pregnancies

Yeh i did read that it's ok but not to bleach. I usually use the home kits and dye it blonde :S

I didn't know you could get highlights when pregnant! I have a nearly 5 week old baby and an accidental dip dye going on as my hair grows so fast.

I so need it cut an dyed.

I used semi permanent colour on the whole head and waited till second trimester to do it. It's been 4 weeks now since I dyed it and no issues - all fine Smile

RedRobin1 · 01/09/2013 10:44

My stylist recommended semi permanent as they are less harsher and less chemicals then permanent. I desperately needed to cover greys

blondebaby111 · 01/09/2013 13:42

if you usually use home kits to dye your hair blonde i wouldn't recommend it. However highlights in foil are perfectly safe, i had this done and i'm normally an all over blonde but i must admit i do prefer the highlights so i may stick with that even after baby is here. Only prob is it is more expensive than doing it yourself, good luck xx

If the NHS says its fine then I am happy to go with that. Coloured my hair twice since I've been pregnant (25 weeks now) and about to do it a third time today.

Stom91 · 01/09/2013 14:22

Is that with the all over home kits? Xx

When I was pregnant last time my hairdressor happily dyed mine several times both in foil and all over colour. We did stay away from the bleach though. She advised that it was all a bit of an urban myth - if chemical absorption was a problem it would be for everyone not just pregnant ladies. But that's just one persons opinion.

Unknowingly I had mine permed before I knew I was pregnant this time round.

colleysmill · 01/09/2013 14:35

Actually now I have a vague memory that its more to do with how pregnancy affects the porousness of your hair - that it takes it on board more?

colleysmill · 01/09/2013 14:40

I could be taking out my behind though!

workingtitle · 01/09/2013 14:47

I use permanent home dye kits and have done my hair 4 times so far this pregnancy. I have patch tested each time because of skin sensitivity changes, which I wouldn't normally do. NHS guidance is that it is fine to dye your hair.

I did a clairol nice and easy medium blonde and I now have Orange roots lol. It might not come out how it usually does

Stom91 · 01/09/2013 15:38

I've highlighted my hair throughout. Could not have survived without Smile xx
