whooping cough vaccine

hi all i was wondering who has had the whooping cough vaccine my midwife at the start of the pregnancy said they do urge women to have it from 28 weeks im now 30 wks booked tomorrow for it to be done she said theirs no effect to baby i was wondering to whom anyone else who had it did it go okay was their any side effects?

I had it a little late - 38 weeks. There was a useful thread on here about a week ago - should be lower down the list.

Side effects for me was just a sore arm that I couldn't sleep on for a couple of nights.

I've had it, at 28 weeks. I was fine personally, no side effects as such just a sore arm for about 24 hrs, felt very bruised but that's all.

It's not a live vaccine so there is no risk to you or the baby or actually catching Whooping Cough from it. Whooping Cough cases have increased massively in the last few years, so there is a huge benefit to having it whilst pregnant, it protects your baby from Whooping Cough in the fist few months until the baby has their own vaccinations.

It's actually DTPP vaccination, the one they give pre-schoolers (Diptheria, Tetnus, Polio and Pertussis) so even better! :)

I had it last week at 33 weeks, I was quite worried about getting ill from it but I was fine :) just ended up with a sore arm for a couple of days x

Hello I had it too at 28 weeks and I had no side affects apart from, as some other posters have said, a sore arm for a few days afterwards x

Had it done at 29 weeks. No side effects other than a rather sore arm!

My mum had whooping cough as a child and almost died so I felt pretty strongly about it.

I had it done last Friday at 29 weeks.

No side effects really other than an egg sized red lump at the injection site with a very painful arm (still)!!

Have you ever had the typhoid jab? It made my arm go similar to that.

Only side effect I had was a really sore arm for a few days.

It was too sore to sleep on, so if you like sleeping on a particular side, avoid getting the jab in that arm!

I had it and it was fine. I wouldn't hesitate personally. My arm felt a little bit tender the next day but nothing major.

I had it a few weeks ago at 29/30 weeks. My arm was a bit sore afterwards, but I could still sleep on that side.

I wouldn't hesitate to have it.

mumtobe not always all the better, I am allergic to tetanus vaccine and there is no single vaccine available in the uk when pregnant, so I can't have it done. It makes me nervous that i found this out through mumsnet rather than my gp or midwife though! [Shock]

I contracted whooping cough during 1st trimester and do not need the vaccine but I will say it is truly awful I felt dreadful with it - id encourage anyone to have it - being confined to my house for a week by the department of health not my finest moment of the year! - I understand why babies die from it as it is horrid - I apparently had the jab as a child but there is a group of us ( born 78 -84ish) where the immunity was not great so were all in the bracket for being susceptible !

I had it about 37 weeks as it was only brought in then. I felt a bit ill that night - headache, feeling sick but not actually sick and went to bed early. Also had a sore arm.

I don't know if it was the whooping cough vaccine or the flu vaccine or the combination of the two the knocked me for six.

IMO it was worth it a I knew DS2 would be protected as I knew I wasn't likely to be able to BF successfully there were also a few cases of whooping cough at DCs school around that time including a friend who's DD was quite ill with whooping cough.

My baby had whooping cough at six weeks. It lasted three months. I was checking she was breathing every 20 minutes night and day for much of this. I was terrified she would die.

Please get the jab.

Thanks Karin, she's about to start school and fine now! However it was terrifying and sort of feel people ought to know why they introduced the vaccine in pregnancy.

I got the DTP vaccine in February before we went abroad. Now 28 weeks. Does anyone know if I should get it again?

I read somewhere (perhaps here) that the bruised arm is from if it's a double dose of tetanus because you've had one recently (I know not if that is true) - I don't remember having a tetanus jab recently, but I did have a bruised feeling arm for about 3 days.

I know that I had my whooping cough jab when little - actually in that age group dexterpat was in - and I know it's one of the ones that wears off/wasn't as effective as others so I didn't hesitate. I can't imagine how horrible it would be to have it myself, and it's life threatening for a baby, so I knew that I wanted it (I raised the subject before my midwife).

TBH I just wish that DP could have it too (and possibly GPs) since they'll also be in close contact with the baby and could pass it on. (I know we could go privately)
