tights and other fun challenges no-one tells you about - any suggestions (on a lighter note)

Hello all,

This morning, I decided the weather had cooled enough, again, to wear tights instead of strutting my bare water-clogged legs. However, the act of trying to put my tights on with my ever enlarging bump would have made you cry of either laughter or sympathy. I fell over twice, while I was sitting down, and I still ended up walking away with one leg twisted near the top! I am shocked I didn't just tear a big hole in them - although I have brought a spare pair to work just in case.

I am "vertically challenged" and find trousers difficult to find at the best of times, so I mainly wear dresses and skirts, which means tights are a must. Occasionally I can get away with wearing leggings, but not all the time. There must be a way to overcome this :)

If my DP had woken up while I was attempting this feat this morning, he would still be laughing at me now, two hours later!

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get tights on, or does anyone have any other surprising challenges that find you laughing at yourself, but also crying!

Please note this is meant to be a lighthearted post, but we all know how close to tears some of these challenges can be! I just don't want to feel alone.

Can your DP help you (if he can do it without laughing of course) :)

Shaving legs is near impossible too. As is standing close enough to the sink to reach the taps (also a short arse)

Rockchick1984 · 22/08/2013 09:44

Hold-up stockings? Only way I found that meant I didn't get twisted bit (if that makes sense!!) and more comfortable as less layers on my bump.

to put plates away as the cupboard is on the bottom pretty much on the floor I have to go to the sofa and slide onto the floor then crawl through the house put them in the cupboard and then crawl back to the sofa. oh finds it hilarious!

as for tights, I feel your pain. I attempted to put some on and ended up in a sweaty swearing heap on the floor. I have decided they are the devils work and shall stick to leggings Grin Perhaps you could smear yourself in butter? help them slip right on Grin

workingtitle · 22/08/2013 09:57

I feel your pain! Tying shoelaces and putting socks on has become a major challenge. I have taken to sitting on the floor... Also, I waxed my own bikini line at 29 weeks. It took me two hours, some amazing contortion and was a huge mess. Not doing it again.

Instead of tights I've been wearing leggins under dresses. It isn't a look I'd go for usually, but solves the issue of bare legs and are far far easier to contend with. Could you do that?!

Excited2meetmyprincess · 22/08/2013 10:05

This made me laugh out loud.

Not experienced the tights thing but being quite short as well as having a bump has meant that by the time I've washed the dishes I have a soaked bump as well. And reaching the back of the cupboard is near impossible as I can't get close enough. Spent ten mins the other day trying to get the tea bags down only to end up sitting on the kitchen floor crying when DH came in!! Lol. Xx

Painted my toenails yesterday at 40 weeks - I think I may have broken a baby's ankle Hmm

My advice, get someone else to do it!

froubylou · 22/08/2013 11:47

Tried to do my bikini line a couple of weeks ago at 21 weeks. Fuck that, can stay hairy! An hour later I had hurt my back, twisted my hip and cut my fango with DP's hair trimmers.

We have ponies and went to a show last weekend for the first time in a few weeks. Was impossible to wash legs off and ended kneeling on floor doing it. Luckily pony was good about it and stood very still for me though I had 2 lovely purple knees.

Usually stand on my window sills to clean inside of windows. Bump and boobs too big for this now so had to get DD (aged 9) to do them and also skirting boards for me, after I got stuck on window sill and had to shout her to bring a chair in for me to climb down onto. There were mutterings of Cinderella and child labour pmsl.

Would those footless tights be any easier do you think? And then a pair of socks if you are wearing boots? Or stick with the leggings lol. Or even perhaps hold ups? At least then you are only doing a leg at a time!

Carole803 · 22/08/2013 12:46

I think leggings may well be the way forward.

Thanks for sharing your funtimes, you have made me chuckle like a naughty child in the corner of my office.

I should do something "important" now so people don't think I am shirking work. Hee hee

BunnyLion I paid for a pedicure for the first time in my life yesterday (38+6), was totally worth the money!

CryingGives I think your DP/DH is a little mean for watching you do that and laughing! Surely he could put a few plates away for you? I think if it was me they would stay where they are :)

I managed to do my bikini line at about 36 weeks, it involved a lot of implements and mirrors, but it actually looked ok! I was very impressed with myself. My legs are another story though!

CryingGivesMeAHeadache · 22/08/2013 13:46

gerty he did offer to put them away but I was having a frustrated 'i can still do everything I could before I was pregnant. I AM NOT ILL!' moment and insisted on doing it myself. It's now his job though as I realised I should probably give in Grin

I just tried shaving my legs sitting on the edge of the bath. I thought that I would be able to balance better sitting down. Unfortunately I ended up over balancing backwards and toppling out of the side of the bath and landed spread eagled on the bathroom floor. Thankfully nobody was there to witness my spectacular mishap.

mycatlikestwiglets · 22/08/2013 13:56

Doing up strappy sandles! I wore some to work in the heatwave but had to take them off as my feet were so hot at work. When I came to put them back on I couldn't seem to reach properly to do the straps up - had to ask a colleague to do it for me in the end Blush. It's slip ons all the way now.

izchaz · 23/08/2013 08:22

I got myself wedged in a changing room in TK Maxx recently. I'd gone in to try on a dress I thought might go over my bump (and look not-horrible with leggings), then realised having walked in and closed the door that I couldn't re-open the door and escape! Took me 2 mins to try on the dress and near 20 to figure out how to open the door and leave in a dignified manner.

Pointer for any of you struggling to reach your feet: slip on boots. Have always lived in mine, but am thankful for them a million times a day now.

KikiShack · 23/08/2013 11:15

I agree with hold ups instead of tights, much easier to get on, and MUCH comfier!
My best mishap involves the oven, I can't readjust where my arms naturally want to carry the oven tray when I take things out and I now have about 5 small burn marks where I keep catching my bump with a hot tray. I now no longer take things out the oven.

abby81 · 23/08/2013 11:37

Oh this is a brilliant thread. Yes same problems to not reaching taps comfortably. I also like to open doors on poor massive belly as I forget how big I am. I attempted to immac bikini line a few weeks ago and accidentally leant too far forwards. Hubby checked my work and I had managed to give myself a moustache apparently. Nice! He had to do it the next time.

I also love getting stuck in small toilets in services etc where I have to literally back up and reverse in.

Oh the joys!Grin

Steffnexis9 · 23/08/2013 12:45

I have found at now 36 weeks pg that i can still do my legs lying down in the bath... BUT NOT SHOWERING... And i tried my bikini line in the shower the other day and cut myself to ribbons so that is a bath job now with one leg up the wall or over the side of he bath.. Lol my other half says he doesnt know why i bother but i hate being that badly unkempt lol ... Im still ok with tights as i put them on sitting down on the bed and i have kega stretchy ones that go up to my boobs lol

TwickyWoo · 23/08/2013 13:44

Oh my - what a great thread... and just what I needed to cheer me up. Feeling knackered (very end of the week!) and wracked with indigestive/wind pains all over my tummy (Since 3am this morning!).

I'm only 23 weeks so although I'm starting to notice the bump more and more I haven't yet had any mishaps. Was crying with laughter at some of your posts though and now feel thoroughly prepared for the humiliation and difficulty that is no doubt yet to come! :)

Lj8893 · 23/08/2013 13:55

I'm 30 weeks so my bump is still a manageable size. But I still forget how much heavier I am if that makes sense.

Getting out the bath is a big challenge, because my body is heavier and I have lost strength in my arms due to not being able to lift anything for the last 7 months I can't lift myself out of the bath!!
I have to twist round and back out of the bath on my knees untill I'm standing.
But then I can't just step out of the bath because I lose balance so I then have to bend down to hold onto the edge of the bath to swing a leg out at a time.

I hope to god dp never witnesses my getting out the bath routine!!

Carole803 · 23/08/2013 18:09

My pleasure is that I am only 22 weeks and retaining water like a big water bed. Not sure what to do with it, I am not convinced sticking a pin in me will help, but what I do know is that I have four months left of getting in my own way, yay!

But it does feel good to know others share the humiliation and "support" from OH! At least it makes them laugh! Lol

Running Around after my toddler has to be the hardest! But bikini line, legs, toenails are such hard work!! Also having locked myself and son outside in our garden it was very frustrating to discover my bump wouldn't allow me to fit through the open window anymore!

PorkPieandPickle · 24/08/2013 13:06

DH is now developing extraordinary skills at both cutting and painting toenails :) he is doing a fan job!! Tonight he has offered to sort out my bikini line... I have faith in him!!
(He does just laugh when I'm struggling with anything else though so he's not as good as he sounds lol)
